apple

apple

Apple はゲルマン語で、血縁語は
スラブ語派、バルト語派、ケルト語派に
見つかるが、古典ギリシャ語やラテン語には
見当たらない。それでも印欧祖語は
再建されている。
 PIE abel- “apple.”

Apple の原義は「実」だったが、
のちに限定的となり、
りんご」を指すようになった。

古英語 (アングロ・サクソン語)
「実」を指す言葉は二つしかなかった。
 1. Old English æppel “any kind of fruit
 other than berries; nut; someone or
 something cherished (ie. pupil or eyeball).”
 2. Old English berie “berry.”

Apple は「くるみ、木の実」も含めて、
berry 以外のあらゆる実を指し、
古英語期にはすでに
apple of one’s eye --- 即ち、
「瞳、大切なもの ( / )」の意味があった。
このフレーズは、以下のように用いる。

 ・She’s the apple of her father’s eye.
  あの子は父親にとても大切にされている。

 ・He (God) found him (Jacob) in a desert land,
 and the waste howling wilderness;
 he led him about, he instructed him,
 he kept him as the apple of his eye.
 神はヤコブを荒涼とした原野たる砂漠に見つけて、
 導き、教え、そして、大切に見守りました。

Apple が「瞳、目玉」を
指すこともあるということは、
Apple Berry の違いは
大きさにあるのではなく、
硬さにあるのだろう。
Apple はたやすくつぶれない実、
Berry はたやすくつぶれる実。

古いノルド人の神話では、
(Old Norse)
世界樹ユグドラシルの緑の枝に
 (Yggdrasil)
イズンと呼ばれる女神が、
 (Iduna)
夫の歌の神ブラギと共に
 (Bragi)
黄金の実を護りながら暮らしている。
その実を食べる北欧の神々は、
若々しさを保ち、不死である。
 アンブロシアやネクトルで若さを保つ
 オリュンポスの神々のように。
あるとき、ロキのいたずらな
 (Loki)
誘いにのって、イズンは
アースガルズから出てしまい、
 (Asgard)
鷲の姿をした巨人スィアチによって
 (Thiazi)
巨人の国ヨトゥンヘイムにさらわれた。
 (Jotunheim)
この事件のせいで、
アースの神々は若返りできなくなり、
 (Aesir)

(Apple of perpetual youth)
ともいわれる。

古英語のゆびのみ (fingeræppla)
「椰子の実」であり、
大地の実 (eorþæppla)
「きゅうり」であった。
中英語の楽園の実 (appel of paradis)
比喩的に「バナナ」を指すこともあった。

今でも修飾語を伴うと「実」の意味になる。
西インド諸島で、ワニが食べるという実は、
 alligator apple
オーストラリアの食用の実は、
 kangaroo apple
卵の形の茄子は、
 egg apple (= fruit of the egg-plant)
ジャマイカのワイルドマンゴーは、
 monkey apple
ざくろ (pomegranate)
 punic apple
エデンの園でイブとアダムがかじった
楽園の実は
 apple of paradise
ところによっては apple と表現する。
松かさ (pine cone) に似ている南国の実は
パイナップル (pineapple) と呼ばれている。
また、悪魔の実 (devil’s apple) といえば、概ね、
マンドレーク (mandrake) のことである。

love apple --- 愛の実」は、トマト
トマトは、十六世紀のヨーロッパでは、
媚薬になると信じられていた。
ちなみに
仏語は --- pomme d'amour
独語は --- Liebesapfel
またトマトはかつて「黄金の実」
 golden apple
と呼ばれていたが、この名付け方は
イタリア語やロシア語と関係がある。
(
ロシア語の語源はイタリア語)
 Italian pomodoro 「黄金の実 = トマト」
 Russian помидор (pomidor)

Apple に意味上対応するラテン語は
 pōmus
このラテン語はフランス語 pomme
語源で「りんご、実」を指す。
仏語で土の実 / 大地の林檎
(pomme de terre) は「じゃがいも」のこと。
pomum は印欧語ではないが、
ローマの果実や木の実の女神ポモナは親戚語。
 ・Pomona is the Roman goddess of fruits and nuts.

ラテン語にはまた fructus (English fruit) もある。
フルーツはもともと
(生ったことの) 喜び、収穫」
の意味であった。

Apple
に意味上対応するギリシャ語は
 µῆλον
現代英語の melon
「甘みのある瓜、メロン、西瓜」を指すが、
古典ギリシャ語では、もっと様々なものを指す。
ギリシャをはじめ、ケルト諸国や
中央アジアの国々では、
龍が実 (ギリシャの場合、  µῆλον )
守っていた。(See dragon)
Apple は、現代英語の一般的な用法では、
りんご (の実/果肉/)」を指す。

  With *apple-time in autumn.
  (Swinburne)

日本語のりんごは、古くは、
りんこう、りんき、りんきん
など呼ばれていた。語尾の - は、
いちごの -と同じで、果物につけた接尾辞。
りんご が「りんごの木」を
指すこともあるように、英語でも
apple tree
を単に apple とはしょることは多い。
十七世紀のベイコンは、

 ・Oaks and beeches last longer
 than apples and pears.
  樫や橅は林檎の木や梨の木よりも
 長持ちする。
と書き残している。

丸っこいものや赤いものを親しみをこめて
apple
と形容することもある。

 ・a pretty apple-cheeked girl.

 ・a plump, rosy-cheeked, apple-faced young woman.

 ・That apple-shaped Head
 which its hair binds close into a ball.

 ・a little apple-headed dog.

英王室の礼装に用いる宝珠は
黄金の林檎と呼ばれている。
(The orb of the English Regalia is called
the golden apple.)

また、腐ったりんごは比喩で、
中英語期からあり、「わるい人」を指す。
シェイクスピアもこのフレーズは用いている。
 ・A goodly apple rotten at the heart.
  (Merchant of Venice, 1.3)
  芯の腐った見栄えばかり良いりんご。

一人でもわるい人がいると、
周囲の人はみなわるくなる、という。
 ・A rotten apple can spoil the whole barrel.
  腐ったりんごが一つあると、
  樽全体が駄目になる。

コックニーの押韻俗語では、
Apples and pears stairs、即ち、
「階段」のこと。略して、apples

apples and rice ( or apples and spice )
nice の押韻俗語であったが、
オーストラリアやニュージーラントでは、
うしろの方をはしょって、
apples
だけで nice の意味になった。
(
この俗語は everything is の代わりに
she’s
を使うこともある)
 ・She’ll be right, mate. She’s apples.
 (うまくいくって。万事うまくいく。)

アフメッド王子のりんごは万能薬のこと。
(Prince Ahmed’s apple)
アラビアンナイトから。

動詞 apple は滅多に使われないが、
「実る、(実が) なる、(蕪などが) 膨らむ」こと。
または、「りんごをもいで集める」こと。

wielderfight

on Finnegans Wake by James Joyce

wielderfight
Discovered in p3:
Sir Tristram… had passen-core rearrived from North Armorica on this side the scraggy isthmus of Europe Minor to wielderfight his penisolate war...

Humpty Dumpty says:
“A wielder is a master, ruler, or governor.  Wielderfight is a verb which means “wield one’s arms & fight,” & German wieder "again," corresponding to French encore, gives influence to this word; thus, wielderfight means “wielde one’s arms & fight again as a master.” We readers are in a way of recirculation by Joyce who guides. "

Sir Tristram

on Finnegans Wake by James Joyce

Sir Tristram
Discovered in p3:
Sir Tristram, violer d’amores, fr’over the short sea, had passen-core rearrived from North Armorica on this side the scraggy isthmus of Europe Minor to wielderfight his penisolate war...

Humpty Dumpty says:

“Who is Sir Tristram? Although it is sure that Joyce borrowed this name from the medieval tale of Tristan & Iseult, & Tristan Tzara, the swiss founder of dadaism, one of the early-20th-century movements in the world of art, which challenged to change the logical & reasonable common sense through & through, Tristram might be a Joynglish compound newly made with French triste “sad” & ram, “uncastrated male sheep,” that implies an ordinary God-leading man everywhere, or sad stray sheep, simply. As James Joyce had many faces, Finnegans Wake has many faces: JJ with a dadaist face drew an absurd & nonsense one. He himself confesses it here with the name of Sir Tristram.”

passen-core

on Finnegans Wake by James Joyce

passen-core
Discovered in p3:
Sir Tristram… had passen-core rearrived…

Humpty Dumpty says:
“To think simple, passen-core is the French phrase pas encore  “not yet,” but to think that a Joynglish word always has various senses in a single sentence, passen-core could conceal something else. For example, passen could be passing, & cor, the Latin word: “heart.” Additionally, core could be thought to mean “friends, company, or a group of important members (ie. the knights of the round table)” --- Sir Tristram is a member of them. In short, I tell you one possible interpretation Joyce may have meant: Sir Tristram had not yet, feeling lonely or void (passing the friends), rearrived...”

riverrun

on Finnegans Wake by James Joyce

riverrun
Discovered in p3:
riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.

Humpty Dumpty says:
Riverrun is a seemingly simple compound made with  river & run, whose surface sense is  the “flow of a river which shapes itself.” But (nous) rêverons hides in this river that means “we will dream” in French, I sense. The sound of French r is slightly different that of English r, but their shapes are completely the same. To read Finnegans Wake is like to dream. We should also keep in mind the oldest Westeern philosophy by Heraclitus: you can’t step twice in the same river, for other waters are ever flowing on to you. In other words, permanence is an illusion & everything is changing forever, A Joystream seems to us readers the same sentence all the time, but in fact we can’t step in the same Joystream, because it is  ever flowing onto us like a river. By the way, in Akitsujima, Chomei Kamono is known by his essay HOJOKI, whose opening sentence is: The river is ever flowing which has not had the same waters before.”

~~~~~~~~ 言葉の遺伝子
 serpent の印欧祖語の語根は「這う、這い進む」ことを指したとされる *serp- である。印欧祖語 *sneg- 「這う、這うもの」はほぼ同義で、こちらは snake の語源とされている。 snake はゲルマン系で、 serpent はラテン系である。 snake と同様に serpent は、蛇そのものや、蛇を連想させるもの、あるいは、聖書に由来する邪悪な存在としての蛇 (= サタン、デビル) を連想させるものに用いられている。まとめると、この二語は主に、
  1) 蛇そのもの
  2) (姿・形・動きが) 蛇に似ているもの
  3) (創世記五章の蛇から) 精神が邪悪なもの、軽蔑の対象となるもの
  4) (古代思想・民数記二十一章から) 永遠・不死の象徴
 を指す。ただし、 serpent snake よりも、「毒蛇」や「大蛇」を指すことが多い。また、「蛇革の」の意味では、 snake が一般的で、 serpent はあまり使われない。
  snake boots (一般的)
  serpent boots (まれ)
  snake wallet (一般的)
  serpent wallet (まれ)
 ラテン語の serpens は原義的には「はうもの」で、「しらみ、みみず、蛇、龍」を指す。「龍」の意味になるのはもちろん、神話・伝説・フィクション・想像の中に限り、英語の serpent はその点を踏襲しているが、 「しらみ、みみず」の意味では使われない。また、ゲルマン語の snake はラテン語の serpent よりも「龍」の意味で使われることがまれなのかもしれない。龍は北欧より南欧に多いのだろう。ちなみにドラゴン ( dragon ) はギリシャ語からできた言葉である。
 北半球のへび座 (Seroent) へびつかい座 (Serpent Bearer) とつながっている星座で黄道上にある。一説に、へびつかい座のモデルはアポローンの息子で、死者をも蘇らせる医術の神アスクレーピオス (Asclepius) であったという。
 南半球の星座みずへび座 (Serpent) には神話がない。この星座が印刷物に最初に描かれたのは、十七世紀のドイツの天文学者バイエル (Johann Bayer) による『天球図 (Uranometria) である。ちなみに北天のうみへび座 (Hydra) はギリシャ神話のヘーラクレース (Hercules) に退治されたヒュドラである。
 語幹 serpent- に接尾辞 -ine をつけた serpentine は、「蛇のような、蛇にみられるような」の意味で、形容詞・名詞・動詞として様々な具体的語義で用いられるその一方で、ほかの接尾辞と結びついた serpentary / serpentic / serpentical / serpentile / serpentous / serpentive といった言葉はすべて、英語史上ほとんど使用されたことがない言葉である。
 -i を伴う語幹 serpenti- がつくる英単語は serpentiform 蛇の形をしている」のほかにもあるが、 serpenticide 蛇殺し」、 serpenticone [蛇がコーン状にとぐろを巻いているのに似ていることから] アンモノイド」、 serpentiferous 蛇がいる、蛇を飼っている」、 serpentigenous 蛇を持っている、蛇を運んでいる」、serpentinous 蛇のような、くねくねしているserpentivorous 蛇を食べる、蛇喰い ()」といった言葉はすべてレアもので、現代文でも、古文でも用例はほとんど見つからない。
Citius, Altius, Fortius.
Citius, Altius, Fortius.
--- Olympic motto
Citius, Altius, Fortius, the Latin words for “Faster, Higher, Stronger,” derives from French Dominican charismatic priest Henri Didon’s (1840-1900) speech made for the opening ceremony of a college sports event in 1891. His friend Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937), the father of the modern Olympic games, was fond of the phrase of these three words & proposed it to be the Olympic slogan in order to cheer the athletes to get better goals in 1894.
蛇の道は蛇
蛇の道は蛇は「悪党は悪党のやり方を知っている」こと。より厳密には「小悪党は大悪党のやり方を知っている」こと。
 西洋では蛇ではなく狼を引き合いに出す。
 英語のことわざは  ----- A thief knows a thief… ----- 泥棒は泥棒を知っている」と言ったり ----- A wolf knows a wolf… ----- 狼は狼を知っている」と言ったりする。もっとも二つを組み合わせて ----- A thief knows a thief as a wolf knows a wolf... --- 狼が狼を知っているように泥棒は泥棒を知っている」と言ったりもする。
 ドイツ語は英語とほとんど同じで ----- Ein Wolf kennt den andern wohl… ----- 狼は別の狼をよく知っている」という。
 フランス語も英語とほとんど同じで ----- Le voleur connaît le voleur, et le loup le loup… ----- 泥棒は泥棒を、狼は狼を知っている」という。
 映画『ジャッカル (The Jackal)』は暗殺者を捕まえる為に暗殺者に協力させるというストーリーである。蛇の道は蛇とはああいったシチュエーションを指すのだろう。
亀の甲より年の功
亀の甲より年の功は「年配者には知恵がある」を意味する。甲 (かふ) と功 (こふ) は江戸時代後期まで音が違っていたので、同一の音になったその頃にできたことわざだろうといわれている。亀は、亀は万年鶴は千年といわれ、長寿の動物とされている。また、亀の甲は古代中国では国の政策を決定する占いに用いられていた。ことわざを作った直接のソースは不明だが、亀の甲羅には何でも現れるが、人間の老人の経験に基づく知恵はそれに勝るといったイメージからできたのだろう。対立することわざに老いては子に従えがある。
 英語では ----- Wisdom grows with age… ----- 知恵は年を重ねるにつれ大きくなっていく」と言ったり、----- Experience is the mother of wisdom… ----- 経験は知恵の母」と言ったりする。
 フランス語には ----- Experiénce passe science… ----- 経験は学問に勝る」ということわざがある。
 ドイツ語では ----- Mit der Zeit wird Man klug… -----時間と共に人は賢くなる」のように言い、これは英語とほとんど同じようなことわざである。
かめ、カメ、亀
語圏では、カメを陸に棲んでいるのか、海に棲んでいるのかで分ける。トータス (tortoise) は陸亀、タートル (turtle) は海亀。日本には元来、陸亀がいないので、海に棲んでいるか、淡水に棲んでいるかで分ける。海にいるものはで、淡水にいるのはすっぽん
 フランス語とスペイン語ではそのような区別がないようで、たとえば、仏語 tortue は単に「亀」であり、スペイン語も tortuga でトータスとタートルの両義がある。
 歩みの遅い動物のたとえも各国語で異なる。英語圏ではかたつむりが、フランス語圏とスペイン語圏ではが、日本語ではがそれぞれ遅い動物の代表である。
  à pas de tortue...
  a paso de tortuga...
のみの市
のみの市は英語の flea market を翻訳借用した語句。日本では音をなぞってフリーマーケットということもある。日本語では flea free も区別なくフリーなので、「蚤」よりは「自由」の方が響きが良いということで使用されるようである。ただし、イディオムの free market は、一般的には、「自由市場」という経済術語で、政府の介入が少ない民間主導の経済体制を作る国の市場を指す。
  flea market はフランス語の marché aux puces 「路上市場」を翻訳借用したものだが、 puce には「蚤」のほかに「かけら、かけたもの (chip)」の意味がある。また、人を指すときは「小物、みみっちいやつ」のような意味がある。フランス語の puce には「はんぱもの」という訳語を充てても良いかもしれない。OED によると、英語の flea market は一九ニ二年の文献に出てくる。その文は、「のみの市と呼ばれているのは、こまごましたもの (fleas = がらくた) をかきあつめて、種々雑多な多数の中古品を売っているからである」というような解説をしている。のみの市の出店者はかつてはテキ屋や道具屋のような商売人だけだったのだろう。今では、一般の人たちが家庭で不要な未使用品や中古品を売るためにもちよるところものみの市と呼ぶようになった。
 フランス語 puce は英語にも入っているが、蚤の色、即ち、「赤褐色 ()」のみを指す。フランス語 puce はラテン語 pulex 「蚤」に由来している。 flea はゲルマン語族の英単語である。
はやぶさ
はやぶさはやはやい (速い) はや、ぶさは「つばさ」のことで、飛ぶ速さから命名されたという。はやぶさの急降下はどんな鳥よりも速い。
 英語falcon は、一般に、ラテン語の falx 「かぎ爪」からできたと信じられている。ロマンス諸語はラテン語の影響下にある。
イタリア語: falcone
フランス語: falcon
スペイン語: halcón
ポルトガル語: falcão
 従って、日本語では獲物を捕らえる時のスピードに着目した命名なのに対して、英語やロマンス諸語では、獲物を捕らえるときの鋭いかぎ爪に着目した命名であるといえる。
 エジプトでは、ホルスの頭がはやぶさである。
 はやぶさは捕捉能力にすぐれた猛禽で訓練も可能なことから、鷹狩りに用いられてきた。また、そのスマートさに憧れる技術者は多いらしく、第二次大戦中の陸軍の主力戦闘機の愛称はであったし、一九五八年 (昭和三十三年) に東京と鹿児島を結ぶ寝台特急にはやぶさの名が用いられたこともある。二〇一一年 (平成二十三年)から、はやぶさは東北新幹線の名前になっている。また、二〇〇三年 (平成十五年) 五月九日に打ち上げられた宇宙探査機もはやぶさと名付けられていた。
 はるか彼方の遠い銀河の太古にもファルコンと呼ばれる鳥がどこかの惑星に棲息していたらしく、ハン・ソロ (Han Solo) の宇宙船の名はミレニアム・ファルコン (Millennium Falcon) と呼ばれている (映画『スターウォーズ』IV / V / VI 参照)。
キッシュとバームクーヘン
キッシュはパイ生地に生クリームや肉・野菜をのせて、その上にグリュイエールチーズをかけてオーブンで焼いた料理であり、フランス語で quiche という。英語はフランス語からの借用で、綴りは同じであり、例えば、「ロレーヌ (地方風) のキッシュ」は Quiche Lorraine という。
 フランス語の quiche はフランス内のドイツ人が話すアルザス語 (Alsatian) の küchen を語源にしている。対応するドイツ語は Kuchen 「ケーキ」である。Kuchen バームクーヘンという語形で日本語にも入って来た。バームクーヘン (独語: Baumkuchen) は日本語に直訳すると「木のお菓子」であり、見た目が木の切り株に似ていることから命名されたものである。また、ドイツ語 Küche は「台所、キッチン、料理、調理法」を意味している。キッシュクーヘンは焼いた料理で、語源的には英語の cook につながる。
potpourri
Potpourri はもともとフランス語であった。日本語のポプリもフランス語から借用されたもの。乾燥させた花や香料等をブレンドして瓶などに詰めたもの。しかし、一六一一年のコトグレーブの『仏英辞典』では --- a pot porride; a Spanish dish of many seuerall meates boyled, or stued together. --- 「煮詰めた鍋料理。様々な肉を一緒に茹でたり、煮込んだりしたスペイン料理」と説明されている。元々、フランス語の pot pourri はスペイン語の olla podrida 「煮込み料理」の翻訳借入であり、これらの言葉は直訳すると、「腐った鍋」の意味になる。食べるのに「くさった」と表現するのは解せない気もするが、日本人も食べるのに「豆腐 (腐った豆)」などというのだから、言葉というのはイメージだけでいい加減に使われているものであるといえる。スペイン人の手で直接日本にもたらされた olla podrida おじやの語源であるという。
 英語の potpourri には、 hotch-potch と同様に、「ごちゃまぜ」の意味が有り、音楽の「メドレー」を指すこともある。
potpourri
noun “hotch-potch, stew; blend of dried petals of various flowers mixed with herbs & spices that emits a pleasant fragrance; jar or vase for potpourri; musical medley.”
[17th century, from French pot pourri, loan translation of Spanish olla podrida, literally “pot rotten.”]
豪華な衣装から出てきそうな音。
基本義「さらさら、するする、そろそろ、わさわさ」
名詞の派生的語義は「豪勢なもの、きらびやかなもの、派手なもの」
------------------------------------ 言葉の遺伝子 ---
frou-frou は、動き回る女性の襞の多いドレスから出て来る衣擦れの音を指すフランス語の擬態語から英語化した言葉てある (例文: Froufrou is a real word; it came from the rustling sound a girl in a dress makes... froufrou は実際にある言葉である。この言葉はドレスを着た女の子が出すさらさらという音に由来している)日本語の擬態語として「さらさら、するする、そろそろ、わさわさ」などがあてはまるだろう。
 ドレスの衣擦れの音 rustle はゲルマン系の擬態語だが、フレンチの frou-frou の方がよりそれらしく聞こえる。
如雨露とジャー
じょうろはボルトガル語の jarro 「水差し、瓶、甕、容器、缶、ジョッキ、カラフェ」から借用された言葉だという。 jarro には「じょうろ」の意味はないが、取手と注ぎ口はある。水を入れおく容器と注ぎ口の間の細長い首がないだけである。女性形 jarra は「瓶、甕、フラスコ」のこと。
 ポルトガルの隣の同じイベリア半島の国スペインにも jarro / jarra はあり、更にフランス語にも jarre がある。これらの単語はすべてアラビア語の jarrah 「壷、甕、焼物、土器」を語源にしている。フランス語 jarre は英語に借用され、jar ができた。jar は円筒状で広口の食べ物や飲み物を入れておく容器を指す。日本語の炊飯ジャージャーの語源であり、まとめると、じょうろジャーはもともとはアラビア語からきた言葉である。
 ポルトガル語でじょうろ regador といい、英語では watering can という。ちなみに英語で水差し jug または pitcher という。 jug は日本語のジョッキの語源である。
naranja
naranja (ナランハ) はスペイン語で「オレンジ」のこと。イベリア半島はアラブの支配下にあったことがあるので、アラビア語からの借用語が多い。英語の orange も元を辿れば、アラビア語に行き着くが、アラビア語からラテン語を経由して、古仏語 pomme d'orenge から英語化したもので、スペイン語とは枝が異なる。pomme d'orenge は「オレンジの木の実」のことだから、orenge は「オレンジの木」のことであった。当初、古仏語でも語頭に n- があり、 narenge のごとき語形であったが、不定冠詞 une のn音に吸収され、orenge の語形となった。外来語のオレンジは、もちろん英語から。 (ちなみに フランス語の pomme は単独で「林檎」の意味。pomme de terre 「大地の林檎 (実)」は「じゃがいも」のこと)
 オレンジはアラビア語では nāranj ( نارنج ) で、これはペルシャ語 nārang (نارنگ ) からの借用。このペルシャ語は梵語 nāraṅga (नारङ्ग) 「オレンジの木」か借用されたものだが、これ以上古い語源は不詳である。一説にはドラヴィタ語族の起源という。これは言葉とモノ (オレンジの木) が二人三脚で伝播した例のひとつである。
