Wilderness is Paradise
A 19th century British devotee of literature, Edward FitzGerald (1809-1883), translated Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1048-1131) into English from the Middle Ages Persian. His work was not sold at all at first, but he revised & published again & again to introduce the Asain sage of medieval times into the modern times world. Omar Khayyam was a Persian astronomer who worked at an observatory in the Karakum Desert for the Seljuk dynasty to create a more precise calendar. He was not only an astronomer & mathematician, but also a philosopher & wine-loving poet. In my imagination, he was thinking about the meaning of life, while he was watching the sun & stars to calculate how long the year was every day & night. After his death, his poetry Rubaiyat (a collection of Persian-style 4-line poems) was found & published. Several centuries later, 1 poem of the Rubaiyyat, Edward FitzGerald rendered into his language like below.
Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,
A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse ── and Thou
Beside me singing in the wilderness ──
And Wilderness is Paradise enow.
19世紀英国の文学愛好家エドワード・フィッツジェラルドはウマル・ハイヤームのルバイヤートを中世ペルシャ語から英語に翻訳した。彼の作品は当初全く売れなかったが、それでも中世のアジアの賢人を近代の世界に紹介するために何度も何度も改訂して出版した。ウマル・ハイヤームはペルシャの天文学者でより正確な暦を作るためにセルジューク朝のカラクム砂漠にある天文台で働いていた。彼は天文学者で数学者であると同時に哲学者であり、酒好きの詩人でもあった。私の想像では、毎日毎晩彼は太陽や星を観察して1年の長さを計算しながら、人生の意味について考えていた。死後、彼の詩集ルバイヤート (ペルシャの4行詩) が発見され、出版された。数世紀後、そのうちの一編の詩はフィッツジェラルドによって次のように訳されている。
大樹の木陰に、ひと塊のパン、
葡萄酒一瓶、詩集一冊 ──
そして荒野の中、我が傍で歌う君。
さすれば荒野はたちまち楽園なり。
