The height of Mount Everest is 29,031 ft, or 8,848m, but it was not certain in the early 20th century. However, there were the challengers, who wanted to climb Mt. Everest whose Tibetan name is Chomolungma “the Goddess of Earth” & Nepali name is Sagarmatha “the Mother of the Great Sky.” No one could achieve at the summit, then. One of the British expedition mountaineers was George Mallory who was asked in a lecture at New York by a reporter why he wanted to ascend the highest mountain of the world. He answered:

"Because it’s there."

They found a route to a higher location at the 1st expedition, & then, found a further path in the 2nd climbing, &  they were finally approaching the peak in the 3rd attempt, but it is thought that they couldn’t touch the summit. The term nuts in US colloquial use expresses rejection or nonsense: “how rubbish!” or “how foolish!” On December 21, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, the Nazi commander Heinrich von Lüttwitz sent the surrender ultimatum to the US commander Anthony C. McAullife of the 101st Airborne Division, which held the Belgian town of Bastogne under the siege of the German army.  He gave the US force only 2 hours to decide. After that, the Nazi threatened, German artillery fire would annihilate the US troops & Bastogne entirely. The last sentence made McAuliffe mad, which was, “All the serious civilian losses caused by this artillery fire would not correspond with the well-known American humanity.” The tough American general of the “battered bastards of Bastogne” spit out just a single word, & it was the US official reply to the Nazi commander.

The bigger the country was going, the more the army was being organized, breaking personal liberty & establishing a ranking in the empire, & hierarchy was built up even in the master race Romans. Ruling people rule & followers follow. It  may happen anywhere anytime. The Latin term exercitus, meaning “army,” is a derivative of exercēre “to train.” The higher officers of the army of the Roman Empire required their men to pledge allegiance to the country or the emperor & to obey military orders unconditionally with the slogan below:

The wise hate war.  Ulysses, the king of Ithaca, pretends to be crazy when Palamedes arrives in the island to urge the king to join the war against Troy, in compliance with the pact of the alliance, that if one of them is attacked, all the Greek kings have to fight the enemy together for him. Ulysses loves his family & himself more than other Greek kings who are far from his home island.

After a few thousand years had passed since the Greek epic was first told, the most cruel war began in human history. In World War II, Captain John Yossarian, a US Army Air Force B-25 pilot, is in trouble with a catch-22 dilemma in Catch-22, a novel by Joseph Heller, which is the origin of the term catch-22 of course. Anyone who doesn’t want to go to the battle isn’t insane, but if he isn’t insane, he must go to the battle in any war. John, who doesn’t want to be killed either in the battle against the Axis Powers or by the command of the higher officers of his own country, comes to the conclusion.

The enemy is anybody who's going to get you killed, no matter which SIDE he's on.

Watch The Big Short, an American film released in December 2015. Director Adam McKay & his team say the drama is “based on a true story.” So this is a page of the American history or the world history. Economic bubbles repeat to appear in the human history since the 1637 Dutch tulip bulb mania. This is one of them.

Lewis Ranieri invented a new banking system in the late 1970s, & then the US banks started to securitize home loans to sell to pension funds, insurance companies, other banks, hedge funds, & so on. After the banks filled the prime rate customers with mortgage loans, they began to lend money to the subprime rate customers. The loans were packaged into MBSs & sold to investors. The more the banks lent money, the more they issued the securities. An MBS was considered no risk, because the banks thought that most of the borrowers would never default at the same time. Dr. Michael J. Burry, featured in The Big Short, cool, genuine one-eyed manager of the hedge fund Scion Capital, was one of the skeptical figures on this banking system. He analysed detail conditions of each & every home loan. The results made him decide to short the housing market, even though Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan stated that it was not the bubble & these securities were rated at AAA by the 2 major rating agencies, & moreover, there were no ways to hedge the “rock solid”  securities. He needed to invent the CDS, Credit Default Swap. that the holder would gain profit if the prices of the securities went down, instead, the seller would gain the premium if the prices went up. The bankers sneered at him requiring high premiums. The deals were smoothly done one after another.  Paying the premiums, Scion Capital waited for the market to recognize the subprime loan risk with patience. 

Deutsche Bank salesman Jared Vennett, in The Big Short,  overhears a rumor about Mike in a bar. FrontPoint manager Mark Baum & his team, caught by Jared’s wrong number call, examine the actual circumstances & find out a dog’s name loan, a street of houses for sale, a loan broker that provides the ninja loan to anyone, especially to immigrants, who are not familiar with the English language, & a happygolucky stripper who owns 5 houses & a condo. Mark comes to the conclusion that the housing market is the bubble.

This is one more impressive scene in this film. When Charlie & Jamie, young challengers, dance happily with their promising CDS positions,  Ben Rickert, a mentor of the 2 guys, reproves: “if we are right, people lose houses, people lose jobs, people lose retirement pays, people lose pensions . You know what I hate about fucking banking? It reduces people to numbers. Here's a number - every 1% unemployment goes up, 40,000 people die, did you know that? Stop fucking dance!” 

The 2008 financial crisis proved that a few were right & many were not far serious with the financial market.
