Don't Forget the Prayer

In the Japanese language, the hand is the symbol of working & making. Te-ma, means “time to work or labor,” te-wo-kasu means “to lend a hand, to work with another, to help or assist,” te-wo-kariru, litterally, “to borrow one’s hands,” means “to get aid, to work with an assistant, helper, friend, etc,” te-wo-kuwaeru, literally, “to add a hand,” means “to make better,” & te-wo-nuku, literally, “to pull one’s hand off,” means “to work or make irresponsibly or carelessly, to neglect part of one’s business; to be lazy.” The Japanese people also say, kuchi-yori-te-wo-ugokase, literally, "Work your hands before your mouth," which means "Shut your mouth & work harder." In Arab nations which Muslims are obliged to pray 5 times a day, it is thought that a man is lazy who forgets to say the Arabic prayer Alhamdulillah, or Praise be to God; thus, to such a person who neglects part of his business, an Arab says:
If you forgettest to say “Praise be to God!” in what other words wilt thou pray?

Actual Profit and Imaginary Happiness

A thousand cranes in the air are not worth one sparrow in the fist.
--- Arab Saying

This Arabic saying feels to me rather exaggeratedly romantic than the English saying of Latin origin: A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. But the two birds in the bush, a thousand cranes flying in the sky, & the other entire universe out of my control are all the same in worthiness. I can’t use them actually, anyway.

One’s imaginary profit or happiness is expressed more humorously in Japanese: You estimate the skin of a raccoon dog, which you have not caught yet; or you can’t eat a piece of cake in the picture; or you are in rice bran happiness

ghoul

ghoul

--- WORD DNA --------------------------------------------------------
ETYMOLOGY
1786, “Arabian evil spirit which robs graves and eats dead bodies.” First introduced in Vathek written by William Beckford. It comes from Arabic ghul “demon,” made up of the Arabic root gh-w-l- “to destroy.” The word also has a figurative sense “person like a ghoul.”

DECIPHERMENT IN JAPANESE
グール、食屍鬼」: 墓場を荒らして死肉を食らう妖怪 (用例: “How many ghouls are there?” “They are two. And one of them is the husband of the other.”... )。比喩では「グールのような人猟奇的な人、おそろしいことをする人(That old she-ghoul dug them up for their clothes. Once she cleaned these things a bit, she could get a few dollars for them in some shabby second-hand clothing store... )

DERIVATIVES
ghoulishly adverb, 1844, “in a ghoulish way.”
ghoulish adjective, a1845, “like a ghoul.”

NOTE
Arabian colloquial: “greedy person.”

naranja

apple of the eye には九世紀の初出例がある。英語はアラビア語と同様に、目に入れても痛くないものではなく、そのものだから大切なのだと表現していることになる。

pupil "student, learner"
[Anglo-French noun pupille “orphan,” from Latin masculine noun pupillus (feminine noun pupilla), from noun pupulus “little boy,” from masculine noun pupus “boy, child” (feminine noun pupa ”girl.” PIE root *pap- “teat.”)

pupil “center part of the iris of the eye”
[Middle French, from Latin  feminine noun pupilla “pupil of the eye; little doll,” from pupa. The pupil is so called because when you look into the eye, an image like a little doll or girl is reflected on that part of the eye.]

apple of the eye "pupil; cherished one or thing."

bismillah

bismillah

--- Word DNA ---------------------------------------

ETYMOLOGY
1813 interjection or noun, originally used by Arab Muslims, who wish to be with God's blessing. From Arabic, literally meaning “in the name of God”: (bi “by, with, in, etc.” + ism “name, reputation” + lah “god”) The generalized word Allah is made with the definite article al “the” & lah.

NOTE
Every sura (chapter),  except the ninth, of the Qur’an starts with a tag of bismillah al rahmani al rahim “in the name of God, the Most Merciful and the Most Compassionate.”

(Praise or Thanks be to God)」を意味している。

 同じアジア人でも中国人は楷書を好む。中国人の漢文の書き方に、漢字は画数が多かろうと少なかろうと原稿用紙のマス目にきちんと収まるように画一的な大きさで、縦も横もきちんと並ぶように書く書き方がある。アラビア語のカリグラフィーはまったく異なり、文様か図案のようにしか見えず、一種独特の魅力を持っている。円形に整えて書く技法は神秘的ですらある。

adobe

adobe

The word adobe came from Spanish into American English vocabulary in the 18th century. The Spanish word was formed from an Arabic term altub "the brick", which was from a Coptic term tobe "brick". Coptic is a language spoken in the ancient Egypt, and the word tobe remains as a hieroglyphic today. In the contemporary English, adobe means:
1. a sun-dried brick made of clay and straw.
2. a building or structure made of such material.
3. Silt or clay deposited by rivers, from which such bricks are made.

In the United States there is a software company called Adobe Systems founded 1982.

Pueblo Native Americans live in houses made of clay. They are called adobe (ah-doe-bee) houses. Adobe is a yellow-colored clay that that comes from the ground. The hot sun of New Mexico and Arizona helps dry the clay to make strong bricks. The Pueblos have used adobe to build their homes for many years.

assassin

assassin

--- Word DNA ---------------------------------------
ETYMOLOGY
Middle English, literally "hashish eater," from Medieval Italian, Medieval French, Medieval Latin, from Arabic hassassin "eaters of hashish", plural of hassass, made up of hasis "hashish".]

ARABIC ROOT
h-s-s- "to mow"

ENGLISH COGNATE
hashish

DERIVATIVES:
assassinate
assassination

外来語 (アラビア語語根 h-s-s- から)
アサシン
ハッシシ

------------------------------------ 言葉の遺伝子 ---
assassin

マルコ・ポーロ (Marco Polo, 1254-1324) がまとめた『東方見聞録 ( La Description du Monde )』にニザール派、暗殺教団、乃至、"大麻常用者" の尊士たる山の老人 (the Old Man of the Mountain) に関する記載がある。

この単語は「暗殺教団」から、宗教や麻薬とは関係がなくなり、その行為を行う者、即ち、「暗殺者、殺し屋、刺客」の意味になった。

On the night before they went out on a suicide mission to kill someone, the Assassins, the 12th century cult of holy warrior hit men, were given a taste of the Paradise that awaited.
命賭けの暗殺任務に就く前夜、聖戦士の刺客からなる十二世紀のカルト教団アサシンは、来るべき楽園の雰囲気を満喫していた。

Lincoln's assassin shot him in a theater, and was captured in a warehouse. Kennedy's assassin shot him from a warehouse, and was captured in a theater.
リンカーンの暗殺者は劇場で発砲して、倉庫で逮捕された。ケネディの暗殺者は倉庫から発砲して、劇場で逮捕された。

The first assassin's thrust came behind, not in front of him.
暗殺者の最初の一突きは、正面からではなく、背後からのものであった。

The light of the candle illuminated the face of the assassin.
蝋燭の明かりが殺し屋の顔を照らしていた。
「殺し屋」から、比喩的な用法として、「格上・上位の者をやっつける人」が成立した。
In her eleven year career, Coetzer has played in three Grand Slam semi finals; twice at the Australian and once at the French Open. She has been given the nickname 'The Little Assassin' by the media, partly because of her small stature but also because Amanda has an uncanny ability to upset players of higher ranking and status.
十一年のキャリアで、クッツァーはグランドスラムの準決勝に三回進出した。二度はオーストラリアオープンで、一度はフランスオープンである。メディアが彼女につけた愛称は「可愛い殺し屋」である。小柄なだけではなく、アマンダは小気味よくランキング上位の選手たち、格上の選手たちを料理するからである。
動詞は assassinate、行為・状況を指す名詞は assassination である。assassination の初出例は『マクベス』に見出せる。

candy

candy

飴、キャンディー、お菓子、氷砂糖。

Sugar or sucrose is extracted from a thick read stalk.
The giant grass, sugar cane, hails from India
and is mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts from
1200 BC. A popular Persian delicacy, a sweet reed
flavored with honey and spices, was called "kand."
The Arab word for sugar is "qand." Perhaps both
are early derivation of the word candy. For years,
sugar was traded throughout the Middle East,
but it didn't leave that regime until the Crusaders
discovered the "sweet salt" on their conquests.
< Beth Kimmerle, Candy: The Sweet History, 2003 >

 khanda

If A is a success in life,
then A equals x plus y plus z.
Work is x; y is play;
and z is keeping your mouth shut.
(by A. Einstein)

Shay was first applied to a variable
by Umar Khayyam (1048-1131), a Persian poet,
in his algebra essay.]
