飴、キャンディー、お菓子、氷砂糖。

　Sugar or sucrose is extracted from a thick read stalk.
　The giant grass, sugar cane, hails from India
　and is mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts from
　1200 BC. A popular Persian delicacy, a sweet reed
　flavored with honey and spices, was called "kand."
　The Arab word for sugar is "qand." Perhaps both
　are early derivation of the word candy. For years,
　sugar was traded throughout the Middle East,
　but it didn't leave that regime until the Crusaders
　discovered the "sweet salt" on their conquests.

　砂糖やサクロースは太いアシ状の茎から抽出される。
　サトウキビは大きな草で、インドが原産であり、
　紀元前一二〇〇年から古代梵語のテクストで
　言及されている。ペルシャの一般的なお菓子である
　蜂蜜や香辛料で香り付けした甘いアシは
　「カンド (kand)」と呼ばれていた。砂糖を指す
　アラビア語は「カンド (qand)」である。この二語は
　ともにキャンディーの語源であろう。時が経つにつれ、
　砂糖は中東全域で取引されるようになったが、
　十字軍が占領地で「甘い塩」を発見するまで、
　中東圏外には伝わらなかった。

梵語では砂糖を固めたものを
　khanda
という。おそらく、砂糖はもともとアーリア人の地で
作られていたのだろう。そこから
アラブの地を通って、ヨーロッパの
アーリア人に伝わり、「砂糖で固めた砂糖」
のような言い回しがイタリアでできた。
英単語の直接的な親はフランス語で、
「砂糖の塊 (sugar candy)」とは
「氷砂糖」のことだった。
その後、candy は「砂糖をかける、まぶす、
シロップ漬けにする」といった意味の動詞に発展し、
過去分詞 (candied) は形容詞化した。

まれな用法として「楽しいものにする」の意味もある。
