この単語はラテン語で「芽、蕾」のことであったが、
エリザベス朝以前から、「近親の、血族の (german)
同じ両親 (祖父母) から生まれた」で使用されはじめ、
おそらく、全体の母音推移の影響で、
第二母音が変化し (-man → -mane)、
その後、german と germane は別語として
認識されるようになり、成立したのだろう。
両語の使い分けが定着したのは、
十九世紀前半からである。
german は、後続形容詞で、
　brother german (同じ両親の兄 or 弟)
　cousin german (同じ祖父母を持ついとこ)
のように、今日でもたまに使われている。
語源となっているラテン語では
　「兄 (弟、姉、または、妹) の」
または、
　「生粋の、本物の」
を指していたが、一本の草木の芽からは、
みな同じような花が咲くという連想からかもしれない。
後者の意味は
　「まじりけがない」
というニュアンスからだろう。
ちなみにラテン語では「兄、または、弟」を
　germanus
「姉、または、妹」を
　germana
という。
動詞 (germinate) は「芽を出す、発芽させる」こと。
「ドイツ人、ゲルマン人 (German)」は、
ケルト語が起源であるとされるから、
