ETYMOLOGY

1813 interjection or noun, originally used by Arab Muslims, who wish to be with God's blessing. From Arabic, literally meaning “in the name of God”: (bi “by, with, in, etc.” + ism “name, reputation” + lah “god”) The generalized word Allah is made with the definite article al “the” & lah.

NOTE

Every sura (chapter),  except the ninth, of the Qur’an starts with a tag of bismillah al rahmani al rahim “in the name of God, the Most Merciful and the Most Compassionate.”

　英語の初出は十九世紀のはじめ。OED はバイロンとサッカレーの用例を拾っている。リチャード・バートンの千夜一夜にも用例はある。『コーラン (Qur’an / Koran)』各章 (スーラ) の書き出しは、「慈しみ愛でることこの上なき神の御名において (bismillah al-rahmani al-rahimi)」である。アッラーフ (Allah) の al は the に相当する定冠詞で、アラビア語で「神」はラーフという。

　アラブ人は食事の前に「いただきます」の挨拶として Bismillah と言う。米国人が食前に祈りを捧げて Amen というのに似ている。食事の後は Alhamdulillah 「ごちそうさまでした」という。 Alhamdulillah は字義どおりには「神に称賛 (感謝) あれ (Praise or Thanks be to God)」を意味している。

　同じアジア人でも中国人は楷書を好む。中国人の漢文の書き方に、漢字は画数が多かろうと少なかろうと原稿用紙のマス目にきちんと収まるように画一的な大きさで、縦も横もきちんと並ぶように書く書き方がある。アラビア語のカリグラフィーはまったく異なり、文様か図案のようにしか見えず、一種独特の魅力を持っている。円形に整えて書く技法は神秘的ですらある。

The word adobe came from Spanish into American English vocabulary in the 18th century. The Spanish word was formed from an Arabic term altub "the brick", which was from a Coptic term tobe "brick". Coptic is a language spoken in the ancient Egypt, and the word tobe remains as a hieroglyphic today. In the contemporary English, adobe means:
1. a sun-dried brick made of clay and straw.
2. a building or structure made of such material.
3. Silt or clay deposited by rivers, from which such bricks are made.

In the United States there is a software company called Adobe Systems founded 1982.

アラビア語の語根は h-s-s- で「刈る」こと。アラビア語の原義は「ハッシシ喰らい」で、ハッシシとは、「大麻」のこと。アラビア語で "ハッサッシン" のように発音するが、語尾の -in の音は、"ムジャヒディン" の語尾の -in と同様に、複数形をあらわす。"ムジャヒディン" (mujahedin) の単数形は"ムジャヒド" (mujahed) で、「聖戦士 (holy warrior)」の義であり、これと同様に "ハッサッシン" の単数形は "ハッサッシ" である。

ハッシシ (大麻、麻薬) は、「刈る」ことを指すアラビア語の語根 hss (h-sh-sh) からで、同源の英単語としては、hashish がある。

「大麻常用者」とはもともとシーア系ニザール派 (Nizari) の教団で、スンニー派側が命名した蔑称であろう。ニザール派は十世紀のファティマ朝で生まれ、やがて、レバノンからアフガニスタンの山岳部に山城を設け、セルジューク朝トルコや十字軍の要人を暗殺するようになる。ヨーロッパ人は、"ニザール" ではなく、"ハッサッシン" をこの教団の呼称として採用し、ラテン語を経由して西欧諸国語に波及していった。語頭の h- を省いたのはロマンス諸語を話す人々である。英語の初出は一二三七年頃で、the Assassins とあり、これに対応する和訳語は「暗殺教団」である。-in はアラビア語で複数要素だが、西洋人は assassin を単数の「暗殺教団員」と解釈していたことになる。ニザール派は一二五六年、モンゴル軍に無血開城して歴史の表舞台から姿を消した。

マルコ・ポーロ (Marco Polo, 1254-1324) がまとめた『東方見聞録 ( La Description du Monde )』にニザール派、暗殺教団、乃至、"大麻常用者" の尊士たる山の老人 (the Old Man of the Mountain) に関する記載がある。

この単語は「暗殺教団」から、宗教や麻薬とは関係がなくなり、その行為を行う者、即ち、「暗殺者、殺し屋、刺客」の意味になった。

　ユダヤの正月 (Jewish New Year)。ヘブライ語「年頭、年の頭」から。ユダヤ暦では七番目の月の初日、及び、二日目で、グレゴリオ太陽暦では、年によって異なるが、九月から十月の間になる。
