Actual Profit and Imaginary Happiness

A thousand cranes in the air are not worth one sparrow in the fist.

This Arabic saying feels to me rather exaggeratedly romantic than the English saying of Latin origin: A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. But the two birds in the bush, a thousand cranes flying in the sky, & the other entire universe out of my control are all the same in worthiness. I can’t use them actually, anyway.

One’s imaginary profit or happiness is expressed more humorously in Japanese: You estimate the skin of a raccoon dog, which you have not caught yet; or you can’t eat a piece of cake in the picture; or you are in rice bran happiness. 

このアラブ人のことわざは手の内にある一羽の鳥は藪の中の二羽と同等の価値がある、というラテン語由来の英語のことわざよりかなり誇張されたロマンティックな感がある。しかし、藪の中の二羽の鳥も、空を飛んでいる沢山の鶴も、自分ではどうにもできないその他の一切合切の全宇宙も、価値の面では同等だ。とにかく、実際には利用できない。

想像上の利益や幸福は日本語ではもっとユーモラスに表現する。捕らぬ狸の皮算用といったり、絵に描いた餅といったり、ぬか喜びといったりする。
