Turn up a Stone

If Masamune Date (1567-1636), the warlord known as the One-Eyed Dragon in the Japanese history,  were an Arab, he would be regarded as the lord of bad luck. An one-eyed person is considered as a person of bad omen in Arab nations. Their custom of turning up a stone behind an unfavorable person walking by, is like the incantation of sprinkling salt in Japan, just after an unwanted guest has left a place, home, shop, etc.. The Arab say:

If thou seest a one-eyed person pass by, turn up a stone.

もしも日本の歴史において独眼竜として知られる戦国武将伊達政宗 (永禄十年～寛永十三年) がアラブ人だったなら、不吉な君主と見なされていただろう。アラブ諸国では隻眼は不吉な兆候と見なされている。通り過ぎていく好ましからざる人物の後ろで石をひっくり返すアラブの習慣は、嫌な客が立ち去った直後に塩を撒く日本のおまじないに似ている。歩アラブ人たちは言う。
