ETYMOLOGY

1791 “Shoshone (Native American people); Snake People.” The Shoshone, who lived in the Great Basin, west of the Bighorn Mountains & east of the Snake River, so named because of its snake-like shape, simply called themselves Newe “people,” but other Native American peoples in the Plains, sometimes called the “Crows,” who knew the Shoshone, expressed them with their hand-motion sign to represent a snake. The Shoshone could approve of this name, because they lived on the Snake River. The Shoshone used the same sign to represent a “salmon,” their important food. The word Shoshone might mean the “grass-house people” in their own language. The word Shoshone derives from sosoni, the plural form of sonipe, that refers to a species of plant used as the material of their houses.

NOTE

It is said that there are only a few hundred people speaking Shoshone fluently now, who live in Nevada, Idaho, & Wyoming in the US. It belongs to the western branch of the Numic group of Uto-Aztecan language family. Shoshone is an agglutinative language.

　ビッグホーン山脈の西方、スネーク川の東方にはさまれた米西部の大盆地 (グレイト・ベイスン) に住むショーショーニー族は、時にからす族といわれる、周の平野部に住む他の先住民族からは「蛇」を指す手話と同一の手話で指し示されていた。その為、英語を話す白人たちは、大盆地の先住民ショーショーニー族を “Snake” と呼ぶようになった。ショーショーニー族は自分たちを単にネウェ 「人」と呼んでいたが、蛇に似た川であるスネーク川から日々の糧を得ていたので、その名前を受け入れていたのだった。ショーショーニー族のその手話は「蛇」を表現せず、彼らの重要な食べ物である「鮭」を意味した。

　ショーショーニーという言葉はショーショーニー語では「草の家の人」の意味であるらしい。彼らは sonipe  (sosoni の単数形) と呼ばれる植物を家の材料に用いていた。

　今日、ショーショーニー語を流暢に話す人は米国内のネヴァダ州、アイダホ州、ワイオミング州に居住している数百人しかいないといわれている。この言語はユト・アステカ語族の西ヌミック語派に属する。ショーショーニー語は膠着語である。ネウェ (Newe) とヌミック (Numic) は血縁語である。
