At Act 4 Scene 1 in Macbeth, the three witches are making something uncanny, throwing away into their cauldron the following ingredients: poison’d entrails, toad, fillet of a fenny snake, eye of newt, toe of frog, wool of bat, tongue of dog, adder's fork, blind-worm's sting, lizard's leg, owlet's wing, scale of dragon, tooth of wolf, witches' mummy, maw and gulf of the ravin'd salt-sea shark, root of hemlock, liver of blaspheming Jew, gall of goat, slips of yew, nose of Turk, Tartar's lips, finger of birth-strangled babe ditch-delivered by a drab, & tiger's chaudron. When Macbeth enters & asks them, “what is’t you do?” they answer, “a deed without a name.” The list of ingredients in their cauldron can’t remain in your mind exactly, but the rhyming refrain will remain in your mind that they sing during making it:
Double, double toil and trouble;THREE WITCHES
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
『マクベス』第四幕第一場で、三人の魔女は、毒入りのはらわた、ひきがえる、沼の蛇の肉片、いもりの目、かえるの指、蝙蝠の毛、犬の舌、毒蛇の牙、眼無し虫の針、蜥蜴の脚、梟の子の翼、龍の鱗、狼の牙、魔女の木乃伊、怪物鮫の口と胃袋、毒人参の根っこ、神を冒涜するユダヤ人の肝臓、山羊の胆嚢、いちいのさし枝、トルコ人の鼻、韃靼人の唇、淫売が絞殺してどぶに棄てた生まれたての赤ん坊の指、虎のはらわたを大鍋に放り込んで、あやしげなものを作っている。マクベスが登場して「何をしているのか?」と尋ねると、三人の魔女は「名もなき行い」と答える。大鍋の中の材料はそのままは覚えられないが、そのあやしげなものを作っているときに魔女達が歌っている韻を踏むリフレインは心に残るだろう。
