One of the Founding Fathers Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was an advocate of the free press, as known with his quotation: “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.” However, it is said that he retained his skeptical view to the press till the end of his life. Some people today say that the mass media can create stupid people, but Jefferson said so about 200 years ago:
The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.
米国の建国の父であるトマス・ジェファーソンは、「新聞のない政府を取るべきか、政府のない新聞を取るべきかどちらかに決めろと迫られたら、私はためらうことなく後者を選ぶ」という名言で知られているように、自由な報道の推進者であった。その反面、ジェファーソンは生涯を通じて報道に懐疑的な見解を持っていたともいわれている。今日、マスコミは莫迦をつくると訴える人がいるが、ジェファーソンはおおよそ二百年前にはそう訴えていた。
読み物をまったく読まない人は新聞ばかり読んでいる人よりも教養がある。
