Be Water, My Friend

Be water, my friend.

Lao Tsu (604 BC - 531 BC) says in Tao Te Ching (ch.78): “Nothing is softer than water in the world. But there is nothing mightier to attack something hard & strong than water.” Bruce Lee may have known Lao Tsu’s wisdom or Taoism. His advice, recorded here, can be applied not only to a kung-fu fighter but to a person in any field:

Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; you put it into a bottle, it becomes the bottle; you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

 老子の『道徳経』 (七十八章) にはこう書いてある。「天下莫柔弱於水。而攻堅強者、莫之能勝。(天下に水より柔弱なるものなし。しかも堅強のものを攻めるに、これによく勝るなし)」　ブルース・リーは老子の思想 (タオイズム) を知っていたのだろう。ここに記録されるブルース・リーの助言は、カンフーの使い手のみならず、どの分野の人にも適用できうるものである。

心を空にして、形を作らず、型にはまらないようにします。水のように。茶碗に水を注ぐと水は茶碗になります。瓶につめれば瓶になります。急須に入れれば急須になります。水は流れて打ち砕くことができます。友よ、水になりなさい。
