Some present-day physicists explain that the universe is not one & there exist an infinite numbers of other universes outside our space & time. In their theory of parallel universes, in one world, Elvis Presley is still alive & sing his songs now, & in another world, Marilyn Monroe has become a happy grandmother still alive, now. According to Alan Guth, “Anything can happen wiill happen” in the multiverse. To have created this theory, they may have been inspired by Epicurus (340-270 BC), ancient Greek philosopher, who sent a letter to the historian Herodotus, on which his cosmology was stated. Moreover, apart from whether he knew or not,  Buddhists in the ancient India thought that there existed three thousand or numberless worlds infinitely expanding. Here, we check the writing which Herodotus read:

Mathematical Chan Master

In the sphere of science, no matter how a scientist thinks or feels about an event, it is just as it is, & it can be only expressed by a law. It means that scientists should be objective to comprehend phenomena. On the other hand, religious people generally tend to add some mysterious factor to an event. But Linji Yixuan, Chinese Chán (Zen) master, who founded the new sect of Linji in the time of Tang Dynasty, or the 9th century CE, was in a way of thinking as if he was an Indian mathematician. A phenomenon is a phenomenon, & whether you understand it or not, it can’t change anyway.

If you understand, things are just as they are; if you don’t understand, things are just as they are.

Enter the Dragon (1973) begins with a few short scenes before the opening theme music: there is a match of Bruce Lee & a monk in Shaolin Monastery at first; & Bruce Lee sees his old teacher & talks with him at the 2nd scene; & he sees Braithwaite at the next scene; & finally, Bruce Lee’s don’t-think-feel instruction comes out. Watch the 2nd scene here, This scene shows us that Shaolin monks are practicing not only kung-fu but Zen:

Bruce Lee: To have no technique. 
Old Teacher: Very good. What are your thoughts when facing an opponent?

A true fighter can fight without fighting. At a scene of Enter the Dragon which the ship sails to the island owned by Han, a drug king & outcast of Shaolin Monastery, Bruce Lee meets a fighter called Parson the Bully, & shows the art of fighting without fighting.

Parson: What is your style?

Bruce Lee: My style? You can call it the art of fighting without fighting.

Parson: The art of fighting without fighting? Show me some of it.

Bruce Lee: Later. (attempting to leave him.)

Parson: (grabbing his shoulder.)

Martial artists are the artists who fight. Bards are the artists who tell or sing. Painters are the artists who paint; photographers, take photographs; composers, compose; & singers, sing. Anyone who does or makes something artistic is an artist. To all the artists, feeling is more necessary than thinking. At the opening scene of Enter the Dragon, a 1973 Bruce Lee movie, Master Bruce Lee trains his apprentice in the woods of Shaolin Monastery:

四国巡礼者にはお馴染みのお大師様こと弘法大師空海 (宝亀五年～承和二年 / Kūkai, 774-835) の『秘蔵宝鑰』(ひぞうほうやく) にある言葉。鑰の字は「かぎ」のこと。この書は従って「秘められた蔵の宝の鑰 (かぎ)」である。この文句は「魂は何も知らずにぐるぐると三界四生を輪廻している」ことを示す空海の説明と受け取れる。

四生

四生は仏教の生き物の分類法。仏教では生き物は生まれ方によって四つに分類する。

　卵生 (らんしょう) は卵から生まれること。

　胎生 (たいしょう) は母体から生まれること。

　湿生 (しっしょう) は湿気から生まれること。

　化生 (けしょう) はカルマによって生まれること。

　湿生と化生は現代の科学からすると外れているが、古代人にとっては、黴や蛆やぼうふらなどはまさに湿気から生じるものに見えたのだろう。化生に分類されるのは、今の姿のまま別界に出現することで、魑魅魍魎の類を指すこともある。

　仏教は、生きとし生けるものは解脱するまで六道四生の輪廻転生を続けると説く。

しっぺ

しっぺは仏僧が用いる竹篦から。僧たちは互いの気の緩みを正すためにお互いに竹篦で打ち合う。しっぺ (い) がえしはその様子から生まれた表現で、「仕返しすること (to pay back)」

互角

互角は牛の角が左右対称で二本とも同じことを示す牛頭両角 (ゴズリョウカク) なる四字熟語からできている。牛をゴと読むのは、牛蒡の用法と同様に、呉音「グ」の慣用音とされるが、牛と書いて「グ」と読む例は思い浮かばない。

　牛頭両角は略して牛角と書くようになり、やがて牛と互の交換が起きるようになっていった。互角は左右一対の牛の角が同じ長さで同じ太さであるように、両者に力や技の「差がないこと」や力量や性能が「同じ」ことを指す。

　ボクシングなどの試合で「互角に戦う」は、英語では --- They fight an even match... --- などという。

crystal-gaze

crystal-gaze は、字面では、「水晶 (球) をじっと見つめる」ことで、魔術用語。水晶は未来や遠隔地で起きている出来事を投影する。あるいは、投影すると古来より信じられている。水晶占い (crystal gazing) は専門用語で crystallomancy という。動詞 (crustal-gaze) は意外に新しく、印刷物に現れるようになったのは二十世紀の初頭から。 crystal はラテン系の単語だが、 gaze は古ノルド語との関係が指摘されている。

　水晶は、日本語では見てのとおり、水の字を用いて表す。水のように透明な鉱物である水晶は古代より人々を魅了してきた。仏教では精神の働きである五蘊を象徴し、キリスト教では、神の光の世界を象徴する。

　シェイクスピアは『ヴィーナスとアドニス (Venus & Adonis)』に次のようで使っている。

Her eye seene in the teares, teares in her eye,
Both christals, where they viewd ech others sorrow.
涙に濡れる彼女の瞳、瞳の中の涙、
一対のクリスタル、お互いの悲しみを見つめ合う。    

　透明さを強調するのに  ---  as clear as crystal --- 水晶のように透明なという慣用句が英語にはある。

　酸化した鉛をガラスに含有させるとクリスタルガラスができるが、このクリスタルは色を指し、「透明な、透明度がきわめて高い」の意味。

　水晶はまた、半導体の性質を有していて、クォーツ (quartz)、 または、石英とも呼ばれている。

鬼籍

鬼籍とはあの世の戸籍。鬼籍に入るは「死ぬ (= to die)」の婉曲表現のひとつ。鬼は、この世から去った者、あの世の住民、即ち、この世の人々から見た「魂となった死者」を指す。中国語の鬼 ( guǐ ) には「幽霊、(死者の) 魂、幻 (ghost, spirit, apparition)」のほかにも様々な用法・語義があるが、いわゆる、日本語特有の「おに (鬼)」の意味はない。

　杜甫の詩『衛八 (えいはち) 処士に贈る』に鬼 (き) と為 (な) る「逝去する、死ぬ」の用例がある。

旧を訪 (と) へば半ば鬼と為る

驚呼 (きょうこ) して中腸 (ちゅうちょう) 熱す

(旧友の消息を聞くと半分はなくなっている。

その名を聞いていくと胸が熱くなる。)

 　鬼籍は鬼録、点鬼簿などとも呼び、仏教用語では過去帳という。

　唐代の詩人楊烔 (ようけい) は故人の姓名をやたらと文中に盛り込んだのでその作品は点鬼簿と揶揄されていた。

経営

経営の古い用例は『詩経』や『書経』に見出せる。『詩経』には、中国史上第三の王朝・周の文王による「霊台」と題された詩がある。詩中では、土地の測量・整備から建造物を建てていく工程を経営といっている。

　漢代の司馬相如 (179 BC - 117 BC) による「上林の賦」は天子の広壮な御苑の中を幾筋かの川がうねりくねりながら流れる様子を経営と表現している。音読みでケイエイ、現代北京語のピンインで jīngyíng であるが、古代にあってはオノマトペであったのだという。上記の例からすると、日本語ではうねうね、または、くねくねに近いかもしれない。オノマトペは多用されるから、意味は多くなる。しかし、何本かの仕事が各部署で紆余曲折しながら同時進行しているさまは、何本もの川がくねりながら流れているさまと似ていて、現代の日中両語の経営の語感に奇妙な形で重なっているといえる。現代語の意味は西洋から来たもので、「指導的立場で会社・店などを運営すること、マネージメント」である。

　仏教では「人生を営むこと」を経営という。かつて寺山修司 (1935-83) は「私の職業は寺山修司です」といったそうだが、仏教用語を用いると「寺山修司は寺山修司を経営していた」といえるのである。

　日本で、「人を育てる」ことは経営の一環であった例がある。現在のパナソニックの創業者松下幸之助 (1894-1989) は「我が社は人をつくります。それからモノをつくります」を信条としていた。トヨタ自動車は「モノづくりの前に、人づくり」がモットーであった。

五行と五葬

チベットの死者の弔い方は五種類ある。

　天葬 (sky burial / celestial burial )は、遺体を高度が高すぎて草木も生えず、強い風が吹く山の頂に運んで、天の鷹に食べてもらうもので、別名、鳥葬。チベットでは一般的な葬儀方法。遺体は物質的には禿鷲の食べ物となるが、魂は天に昇る。

　水葬 Iwater burial) は川岸で遺体をばらばらにしたり、あるいは、白い布で包んで川に流す弔い方である。乞食や孤児はこの方法で見送られる。遺体は魚の食べ物となり、魂は清められる。

　土葬 (inhumation) は天然痘などの疫病で亡くなった人や、武器で殺された人、殺人犯などの埋葬方法である。チベット以外の国で土葬というとふつう棺桶におさめて埋めるが、チベットでは棺桶は使わない。不幸が二度と起きないようにとの願いを込める。

　火葬 (cremation) は焼いてのこった遺骨を高い山や川に散骨したり、仏塔におさめたりする弔い方である。高僧や高位高官に用いられる。

　塔葬  (pagoda burial) は、いうなれば、木乃伊にして、仏塔に安置する弔い方である。木乃伊は活仏であり、死後、塩で水分を絞り出し、防腐効果のある香料などを用いて保存する。歴代のダライ・ラマはこの方法で弔われる。

　中国人はチベットの葬礼を奇異に見るが、どうも五行に対応しているように思える。ぴったしではないが、以下のような対応表はできる。

 火→火葬

水→水葬

木→塔葬 (仏塔は木や石でできている)

金→塔葬 ( 同上 )

土→土葬

(該当なし)　→空葬

 　塔葬以外は西洋の四大元素に対応する (強引か?)

天上天下唯我独尊

紀元前六世紀頃の天竺に、釈迦族の王浄飯王 (じょぼんのう・シュドーダナ / 梵語 Śuddhodana) とその妃摩耶 (梵語 Māyā) がいた。

　ある晩、王妃摩耶は夢を見た。悪魔が姿を消して、光を放つ六本の牙の白い象が現れ、摩耶の右脇腹から体内に入った。目覚めてこの夢のことを夫である王に話すと、王は 婆羅門 (バラモン / 梵語 braahmana) を呼んで占わせた。婆羅門は太子の懐妊を予言した。釈迦 (梵語 Śākya) の入胎である。白い象には前世の釈迦が乗っていたのだ。前世の者が新しい人生を始めるために胎児になって次の世界の母体に移ることを入胎という。

　摩耶は出産のために里帰りすることになり、帰路の途中で出産した。国中が穏やかで、花があちこちに咲き乱れていた。無憂樹 (むうじゅ) の花が咲き誇る藍毘尼園 (ランビニおん / 梵語 Lunbini) で一休みして、沐浴したあとに、花を一輪とろうと腕を伸ばしたとき、右脇腹から釈迦が生まれてきた。生まれたばかりの釈迦は、四方に七歩ずつ歩いたあと、右手のひとさし指を天に、左手のひとさし指を地面に指して、「天上天下唯我独尊」と宣言した。

ETYMOLOGY
 
The figurative sense came from a Siamese custom that the king made a present of a white elephant to an unpleasant courtier, who the king wanted to ruin. The white elephant was highly respected & the recipient had to treat it with a great care.

white elephant は厄介な財産などを指す比喩。昔、シャム、即ち、タイの王は問題のある家臣がいると、白い象を贈っていた。白い象は聖獣であるから、乗るだとか、何かを運ばせるだとか、とにかく労役に使うことは許されなかったのだろう。しかし、象であるから餌は沢山食べる。英語話者がこのエピソードを聞いて、白い象に「(維持・管理に) 費用が嵩む厄介な (役に立たない) 財産」の比喩的な意味を与えた。

白い象は仏教国では、釈迦の誕生にまつわる伝説に登場する聖獣である。
