ETYMOLOGY

In the 17th century, the Russian word was adopted into English. The word form was not steady in early use. The Present Day Russian form is Мамонт (mamont) that is considered to come from Old Vogul *mēmoŋt “earth-horn,” whose 1st syllable is reconstructed with evidence of Vogul mā “earth”, cognate with Finnish maa “earth”. Vogul is one of the Ugrian languages of the Ural-Altaic family. The mammoth was once supposed to burrow in the earth.

In the early 19th century, adjective use was invented from the mammoth’s enormous size in American English. The 1st adjective mammoth was used to describe the size of a 1,235 pound cheese produced in 1802 (Cheshire Mammoth Cheese.)

In the 19th century some American writers used mammoth to refer to a mastodon, another extinct elephant-like animal, but now this use is obsolete.

マンモスはゾウ科マンモス属に属する動物。500万年くらい前の鮮新世に出現し、4000年ぐらい前の完新世に絶滅した哺乳類。長い鼻、長くて曲がった牙と長い毛が特徴。シベリアから発掘された沢山の化石やユーラシア大陸と北アメリカ大陸で見つかった石器時代の人々が住居の洞窟で描いた絵から存在が知られるようになった。その象牙は中世から中国と欧州で珍重され取引されていた。

英単語 mammoth はロシア語から。借入当初、語形は定まっておらず、しばしば、 mammon 「富 = 人心を貪欲にする悪魔 / マモン」と同形であった。この語形はもしかすると、マンモスの牙の取引と関係があるのかもしれない。マンモスの牙は好事家に愛好され高値で取引されていた。

ロシア語は古ヴォグル語 *mēmoŋt からとされていて、最初の音節は「大地」を指し、後半部は「角」を指す。つまり、マンモスのマは「大地」を指し、この言葉はフィンランド語の maa 「大地」と同系である。ヴォグル族はウラル・アルタイ語族の一派。マンモスは土の中に巣穴を作って棲んでいたと考えられていたことから、「土の角」と名付けられた。

英単語 mammoth が「大きい、でっかい、巨大な、どでかの、怪物並みの」などを指すようになったのは、19世紀初頭のアメリカで、その最初の用法は Cheshire Mammoth Cheese であった。この重さ560kgの怪物チーズは1802年、マサチューセッツ州のチェシャーという畜産の町からトマス・ジェファーソン大統領にプレゼントされたものであり、ジェファーソンのモットーが刻印されていた。
