清き者には、すべて、清い。

このラテン語の諺は新約聖書『テトスへの手紙 (the Epistle of Paul to Titus)』一章十五節に記されている。一六一一年に刊行された欽定訳聖書 (King James Version) の当該箇所には次のような文が載っている。
Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.精神や意識のけがれは、ユダヤ人の作り話や真理から外れていった人たちの教え (一章十四節) によって引き起こされる、というのが新訳聖書の解釈である。
清き人たちには万物が清いものです。しかし、けがれて信じない人たちには清いものはありません。しかもその人たちの精神や意識までもがけがされてしまっているのです。
上記のような聖書の文言は最近まで知らなかったが、puris omnia pura に最初に出会ったのはかなり昔で、バートン卿 (Sir Richard Burton) の『千夜一夜の書 (The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night)』であった。アラビアンナイトの英訳書の題辞には幾つかの名句が並べられているが、その筆頭に掲げられているのがこの諺であり、バートン卿は「アラブの諺 (Arab Proverb)」と説明書きしている。
ラテン語の purus (男性形主格) は英語 pure の語源である。
