FORMATION
Greek legend. Once upon a time in Phrygia, there was no king. An oracle told poeple that the next man driving his ox-cart to enter Telmissus, the capital city, should be their first king. Gordius came into the city driving on his cart. He had been already told about his destiny by an eagle perching on his cart as a sign from the gods. Phrygian priests & people welcomed him entering the capital. The priests announced that he became king, & then, in appreciation for it, Gordius's son Midas offered the ox-cart to Sabazios (Phrygian god, equivalent to Greek Zeus) & tied it to a post with a rope of bark. The knot was so intricate as a puzzle ring that no one could untie. In a later age, although Phrygia was invaded and reduced to a satrapy of the Persian Empire, the ox-cart was still tied up to the post of the palace. Alexander the Great came there as a new ruler. When his army was wintering at Gordium (Greek name for the capital of Phrygia,) he tried to untie the knot. He had got an oracle that the man to untie the knot should be a conqueror of the East. After several attempts got failed, he cut the knot into two with just one stroke of his sword.

ゴルディオスの結び目を切るは、ギリシャの伝説からできたフレーズ。その昔、プリュギアには王がいなかった。都のテルミッソスに、次に牛車で訪れる者を初代の王とせよ、と神託はいう。ゴルディオスが都に牛車を牽いてやってきた。神々からの知らせとして、鷲が牛車にとまり、あらかじめその運命は伝えられていた。プリュギアの司祭達や住民は入城する彼を歓迎した。司祭達によって彼は王と宣言され、その返礼として、彼の息子ミダスはサバティツィオス (ギリシャのゼウスに相当するプリュギアの神) に牛車を捧げ、樹皮の縄で結わえた。その結わえ方は知恵の輪のようにあまりにもややこしくて誰にも解けなかった。後の世、プリュギアは侵略され、ペルシャ帝国の属領となったものの、牛車はまだ宮殿の柱に繋がれていた。そこに新たな支配者としてアレクサンドロス大王がやってきた。その軍隊がゴルディオン (プリュギアの都のギリシャ名) で越冬しているとき、アレクサンドロスは結び目を解こうとした。解く者が東方の支配者になれると神託は告げていたのである。いくらか試したが、うまくいかなかったので、アレクサンドロスは剣を抜いて一刀両断のもと縄を断ち切った。

以上のような伝説から、ゴルディオスの結び目を切る (to cut a Gordian knot) という慣用句はできた (不定冠詞 a の代わりに定冠詞 the や、文脈により、ほかの指示詞を入れることもある)。ゴルディオスの結び目を切るとは、「力ずくで (または、勇敢な態度で、シンプルに) 難題を解決したり、取り除いたりする」ことである。

このフレーズから切り離された Gordian knot は「難題、ややこしい問題」のことであり、シェイクスピアに用例がある。

東アジア・漢字文化圏には中国の快刀斬乱麻を元祖とした同様の慣用句がある。
