　エドマンド・スペンサーは一五九五年に新妻のために詩を詠んだ。タイトルは Epithalamion 「祝婚歌」である。そのタイトルはギリシャ語からできているが、逐語的に訳すと「婚礼の間に (upon the bridal chamber)」である。翌年、スペンサーがワーセスター伯の二人の娘の披露宴に出席した際、もう一篇の詩をしたためた。そのときは自分の新妻に贈った詩と区別したかったのか、単に Epithalamion の epi- を嫌ったのか、よくわからないが、 pro- 「前」を付与して、 prothalamion と題した。pro- は for にも対応した接頭辞であり、 prothalamion は「婚礼の間に (for the bridal chamber)」と解釈できる。
　epithalamion と prothalamion はともに「祝婚歌 (詩)」のことである。ギリシャ語の語尾 -on はラテン語の -um に対応しているから、英語では、epithalamium ともいう。
