A Man of Letters Sees Paroemiographers in Books

Isaac D'Israeli (1766-1846), Benjamin Disraeli’s father, was a paroemiographer. A paroemiographer is a man of letters who reads & digests works by other authors, & collects quotations, & then, writes his own proverbs in his works. Isaac D'Israeli, whom we can call an English Jorge Luis Borges, retold the traditional Middle East tales, created poems, & wrote some biographies & literary essays. He is now reckoned as a paroemiographer. His greatest work, Curiosities of Literature (1791-1823), is a collection of his essays telling us historical persons & events, especially ones about book collectors. A curious opinion about England, the land of letters, is found in The Philosophy of Proverbs, one of his essays in the 2nd series 3-volume version of this work:

England may boast of no inferior paræmiographers.

ベンジャミン・ディズレーリの父であったアイザック・ディズレーリは箴言 (蒐集) 家であった。箴言家とは、他者の著した文学作品を読んで、消化して、名言名句を蒐集し、やがては自分の作品に名言を書くようになる文人のことである。イングランドのホルヘ・ルイス・ボルヘスとも呼べるアイザック・ディズレーリは、中東から伝わった噺を再話し、詩を創り、伝記や随筆をまとめ、今では箴言家の一人に数えられている。彼の偉業である『文学への興味』は、歴史的な人物や出来事、特に蔵書家について語っている随筆集である。この作品の三巻からなる2ndシリーズ中の「ことわざの哲学」に、文学の国イングランドについての興味深い意見が綴ってある。
