The universe began with one English onomatopoeia --- BANG! The term bang is the sound of a heavy blow or a pistol firing. An explosion of a nuclear bomb is also called a bang. Bang, moreover, is a coarse slang term which means an act of sexual intercourse. Even though bang is relatively familier for every-day life of English-speaking people, it seems that the word is not suitable for a technical term of astronomy or theoretical physics. The term big bang first came into the world out of the mouth of a skeptical astronomer Fred Hoyle (1915-2001). He disapproved of the hypothesis of Georges-Henri Lemaître’s (1894-1966) primeval atom saying that the universe had begun at only one point of super high density & super high temperature, persisting in his own theory of the steady state, which explained that the universe is in the steady state having no birth & no end. In his lecture on BBC radio in March, 1949, he had blurted out his true mind carelessly uttering the vulgar word bang:
We come now to the question of applying of the observational tests to earlier theories. These theories are based on the hypothesis that all matter in the universe was created by one big bang at a particular moment in the remote past.
宇宙は英語の擬態語のひとつ BANG からはじまった。BANG は強く打ちのめす音であり、ピストルの発射音である。核爆弾の爆発もBANGである。BANGはさらに性行為を意味する下品なスラングでもある。英語話者の日常生活にはいくぶん馴染みがあるけれども、天文学や理論物理学の専門用語には不向きなように見える。ビッグバンという用語がはじめて世に出たのは懐疑派の天文学者フレッド・ホイルの口からであった。ホイルは自身の宇宙には始まりも終わりもなく定常な状態にあるという理論に固執して、宇宙は超高密度で超高音のたったひとつの点からはじまったとするジョルジュ・アンリ・ルメートルの原始的原子仮説を受け入れなかった。一九四九年三月、BBCラジオの講演でホイルはついうっかり俗な BANG という言葉を漏らして本心を口走ってしまったのだった。
私達は初期の理論に対する観察実験の適用に疑問を呈しています。これらの理論は遠いはるか昔のある瞬間に一回のBIG BANG (ドッカーン) で宇宙の万物が創造されたという仮説が基本になっています。
