Narayana, who was a pandit employed by Bengali king Dhavalachandra in the 12th century, re-edited Panchatantra, a collection of animal stories with lessons, which had been originally written in Sanskrit prose & verse in the 3rd century BC, adding some stories. Narayana’s book was entitled Hitopadesha, “Beneficial Advice” in Sanskrit. One of his lessons shows that good books may not be enough for learners to be wise:
Those who have studied good books may still be fools.
十二世紀にベンガル王ダヴァラチャンドラに仕えていたインドの賢者ナーラーヤナは、いくらか話を付け加えて、紀元前三世紀に梵語の散文と韻文でまとめられた寓話集『パンチャタントラ』を再編した。ナーラーヤナの本は梵語で「ためになる助言」、即ち、『ヒトーパデーシャ』と題された。賢くなるのに良書があれば十分とはかぎらない、とナーラーヤナの教訓のひとつは諭している。
良書から学んだ者も、なお愚かな者のままであろう。
