Usurper Fears to be Usurped

At Act 3 Scene 1 in Macbeth, “to leave no rubs nor botches in the work,” Macbeth orders two murderers to kill Banquo & his son Fleance. The usurper of the throne seriously fears to be usurped from the throne. A conversation between Macbeth & Lady Macbeth at Act 3 Scene 2 shows us that he tries to strengthen his malice & to defeat his fear:

 LADY MACBETH
Things without all remedy
Should be without regard: what's done is done. 

MACBETH
We have scotch'd the snake, not kill'd it:
She'll close and be herself, whilst our poor malice
Remains in danger of her former tooth.
