The word legion refers to an ancient Roman army unit that was formed by 3,000-6,000 soldiers, or means “lot, multitude. number” (eg. a legion of angels = a lot of angels). Their name is Legion, is a saying derived from Mark 5:9 that means that the same kind of them are innumerable. Jesus comes into the country of the Gadarenes, & then, meets a man with an unclean spirit out of the tombs who abuses himself. Jesus exorcises the evil spirit out of him & asks what his name is. He answers:
My name is Legion: for we are many.
