Nature Is More Beautiful

Flowers in nature are more beautiful than philosophy told by books… A lot of poets feel so. Walt Whitman (1819-92), known as the father of free verse, is such a poet. too. However, he was not a poet who wrote his poems depending on only his intuition. Leaves of grass, his major work, was expanded & revised several times until his death, since the first publication in 1855. However, feeling for the poet may have been more important than thinking. Let’s read a line in Song of Myself in Leaves of Grass.
A morning-glory at my window satisfies me more than the metaphysics of books.

Nature Provides Exceptions

Nature Provides Exceptions

Nature provides exceptions to every rule.

── Margaret Fuller

This is a quotation that American transcendentalist Margaret Fuller (1810-1850) says in her book Women in the Nineteenth Century. She traveled from Chicago via Niagara Falls to Buffalo, interacting American Native tribes in summer, 1843, & she wrote the adventures as a book of Summer on the Lakes. She was the first woman to be allowed to enter the library at Harvard College & she used it to create the work, especially to research the Great Lakes.
She was then asked to write a serial essay for The Dial of Emerson. The title was The Great Lawsuit. She expanded it. 1845, & published as a book with the title Women in the Nineteenth Century. The book is the milestone of American history of feminism.

Listen to a calm sea sing!

Henry Major Tomlinson (1873-1958), UK writer, who loved the sea, wrote in Some Hints for Those About to Travel (1923):
Most of us, I suppose, are a little nervous of the sea. No matter what its smiles may be, we doubt its friendliness. It is about as friendly as the volcano which is benign while it does not feel like blowing up. What draws us to the sea is the light over it. Try listening, in perfect safety, to combers breaking among the reefs on a dark night, and then say whether you enjoy the voice of great waters.

Do you know Dolphinese?

It is of interest to note that Carl Sagan (1934-96), US astronomer & SF novelist, has been reported to have noted below:
It is of interest to note that while some dolphins are reported to have learned English --- up to fifty words used in correct context --- no human being has been reported to have learned dolphinese.

Not Everything Has a Purpose

What is a purpose of life? Stop worrying about it & see the cat. Garrison Keillor (b. 1942), US radio show host & humorist, once suggested that we should observe cats more:
Cats are intended to teach us that not everything in nature has a purpose.

Nature's Great Masterpiece

John Donne (1572-1631), English metaphysical poet, had never explored the broad expanse of ocean & had not seen the whale shark swimming there at leisure. He kept staying in his study, thinking, & creating poems. One day, he wrote a passage to praise the elephant:
Nature's great masterpiece, an elephant,
The only harmless great thing...

tsunami

tsunami

--- Word DNA ---------------------------------------
1896 "a series of big sea waves mostly generated by an earthquake that often sweeps over the coast at high speed." Also used in a figurative sense: "sudden big wave, movement, etc."

FORMATION
From Japanese (津波 / 津浪): tsu "harbor" & nami "wave."
Other expressions:

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/1896/09/japan-tsunami/scidmore-text

Tempus edax rerum

Tempus edax rerum.
--- Ovid, Metamorphoses

word-for-word translation
Time, (the) devourer of (all) things.

general translation
Time is the devourer of all things.
