ラテン語の形容詞から。その名詞形 jocus は「冗談、言葉遊び」のことであり、joke の先祖である。
jocose をはじめ、英語で /j-k (g) -/の音の語は印欧祖語 *yek- 「話す」の Ｏグレイド形 (O-grade form) からできているとされている。同意の jocular はラテン語の指小辞のついた形容詞 joculus から。juggler も同様に joculus から。但し、英語の juggle は juggler からの逆生成 (back formation) とされている。
jeopardy と jewel の場合は、うしろの k (または g) の音が消失した形である。それらの子音はフランス人が省いたものである。
jeopardy はもともとチェスやそのほかのゲーム (遊び) で情勢が「五分五分」であることを指していた。「勝つか負けるかわからない緊迫した情勢」が「予断を許さない情勢、危険な情勢」の意味になったと考えられている。
jewel 「宝石、ジュエル」もまた「あそび」からできている。
もしかすると、印欧祖語 *yek- は、単に話すことを指すのではなく、「おしゃべりする、談笑する」といった「娯楽としての会話を行う為に言葉を発すること」といった意味 (to chat, have a talk for enjoyment, or make a joke) が込められているのかもしれない。
