The cat loves fish, but does not like to wet her paws. Shakespeare didn’t write the proverb directly in Macbeth, but gave Lady Macbeth her words, in which the proverb was hidden. To hurry up, she says to her husband:
LADY MACBETH
Wouldst thou have that
Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life,
And live a coward in thine own esteem,
Letting I DARE NOT wait upon I WOULD,
Like the poor cat i’ th’ adage?
