(一説によると、この名字は
バスク語に由来するらしく、
もしそうだとすると、
原義は「穴だらけ」になる。)

シルエット大臣の死後三十年ほどが経つと、
英米の雑誌も影絵を用いるようになり、
英国ではそれをしばしば、単に
「影 (shade)」
と呼んでいたから、「シルエット」が
一気に普及したわけではなかった。
すぐに動詞用法も生まれ、
その受動態 (silhouetted) は、
やがて形容詞として独り立ちした。
