シャム双生児。
肉体的に繋がっている双子。
シャム (Siam) はタイ (Thailand) の旧名。
十九世紀、興行師で、自称「山師たちの王子」
であったバーナムは、肝臓で繋がっていた
シャム出身のバンカー兄弟を
興業の呼び物にしていた。
この兄弟は四分の三が華僑の血を引いていたが、
バーナムは、二人の出身地のシャムの方が
エキゾチックな響きがあると考え、二人を
シャムから来た双子
Siamese twins
と呼んでいた。
インとチャンの合胴双生児は、
双子の姉妹と結婚して、
二十人以上の子をもうけた。

[19th c., coined by Phineas Taylor Barnum
(1810-91), an American entrepreneur,
showman, writer, politician, who called himself
"Prince of Humbugs." He hired Eng and Chang
Bunker (1811-74), twin brothers from Siam,
who were joined at the liver; and exploited them
on the sideshow circuit. Although the Bunkers
were really three-quaters Chinese, Barnum thought
"Siamese" was more exotic.]

Actual Siamese twins were being exhibited
in the United Stated when Mark Twain was writing
a humorous sketch about complications of
two separate people being physically connected.
