Richter scale

リヒタースケール、マグニチュード。
(なぜか独語風に「リヒター」という)

　A big earthquake with the strength of
　8.1 on the Richter scale.
　マグニチュード8.1の大地震。

アメリカの地震学者リクターの名に因む。
カリフォルニアに発生する地震の規模を
ランク付けするために
一九三五年に考案されたのが最初。
震央から、その周囲百キロの範囲で
どの程度ゆれたかを示す指標。
地球の地殻が発せるエネルギー量は
マグニチュード10が限界だといわれている。
日本の気象庁が用いる「震度」は
マグニチュードと同じではない。

　(1900-85), American seismologist who devised
　this scale in 1935 to rank earthquakes occuring
　in California.]
　scale of 0-10 for representing the strength of
　an earthquake; magnitude.
　(This is measured by seismograph.
　Experts believe that the Earth's crust cannot
　store enough energy to release a magnitude 10
　earthquake so that is considered to be the limit.)
