Laputa, the Flying Fortress

Laputa is one of several strange countries which Lemuel Gulliver sees. It is a levitating island nation which men can maneuver in any direction. Laputa rules Balnibarbi beneath the air zone where it can fly, threatening to block the sun light & to throw rocks down to rebellious areas. Jonathan Swift’s imagination may have inspired some Japanese animation creators. The people in Laputa are scientific, but it doesn’t seem that they are smart. Let’s read a fragment of Gulliver’s Travels (1726)

He had been eight years upon a project for extracting sunbeams out of cucumbers, which were to be put into vials hermetically sealed, and let out to warm the air in raw, inclement summers.
