What is Politics?

It is said that the top wealthiest people in the United States, 1% of the population, own half the wealth of all the people.  It means that the poor are the overwhelming majority in population. In democracy, politicians must get major votes to win in an election, of course,  & they need much money for the campaign. Oscar Ameringer (1870-1943), German-born American socialist, had put an ironical definition to politics:

Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other.

米国の人口の一パーセントに相当する上位の富裕層は国民全体の富の半分を所有しているといわれている。つまり、人口では貧しい方が圧倒的多数なのだ。民主主義では、当然、政治家は選挙で勝つために多数の票を獲得しなければならず、そのためには多額の資金も必要となる。ドイツ生まれのアメリカの社会主義者オスカー・アメリンガーは政治を皮肉に定義している。

政治とは、貧困層を富裕層から、富裕層を貧困層からそれぞれ守ってあげると約束して、貧困層から票を、富裕層から選挙資金を獲得する礼儀にかなった芸当なのである。
