ETYMOLOGY
French from Latin omnibus, dative plural form of omnis “all (people or things).” Bus, shortened form which appeared in 1832, came via omnibus from French phrase voiture omnibus “vehicle for all.”

印欧祖語は *op- で「はたらく、たくさんつくる」こと。「たくさんつくりだす」という語義では、主語が人以外でも良いのだろう。つまり、「豊作である」などの意味もあったのだろう。ゲルマン祖語を通じて古英語になった efnan は、英語の語彙からは消え去った。「はたらく」ことを意味する現代英語は work であり、この単語は印欧祖語 *werg- 「おこなう、する (”to do”)」から発したものである。 *op- の根っこから出てきたゲルマンの枝で見出せる単語は、「担う、演じる、行う」などを意味するものである。ドイツ語の üben は「習慣にしている、慣れる、練習する、鍛える」ことである。

*op- の枝で一番太いのはラテン語の枝である。ラテン語 opus は「仕事 = 作品」であり、英語でもそのまま綴りで使われている。opus から生じた動詞に operari があり、英語では operate になっている。 operari と接頭語 co- 「共」がいっしょになると、cooperate 「共に働く = 協力する」になる。

opera は opus の女性形名詞で「仕事」のほかに「労働、労苦」の意味であった。イタリアで「歌劇」の意味になり、のちに英語にも借入された。

copy は「複製をつくる」ことだが、多数にするということである。ラテン語 copia は「豊富、豊穣、ふんだん、、豊かさ、沢山あること、いっぱいあること」を原義にしている。具体的に財産が豊富にあることや兵力が整っていることなどを指していた。copious は形容詞で「豊富な」ことを指す。

p が f 化した単語には、ラテン語 officina 「仕事場」があり、英語 officinal の語源である。ラテン語では一般的に作業場全般を指すが、中世の俗ラテン語時代に薬剤師の仕事場を指すようになり、現代英語はその系統を受け継いでいる。

ラテン語の形容詞 omnis 「すべての」も印欧祖語の *op- からできている。語形の詳細な変化は不明だが、「たくさん→種々雑多にある多数の→すべての」と意味が形成されたのだろう。omni- という語幹部は接頭辞として、英語でも幾つかの単語を形成する。

omnibus は omnis の複数与格形。十九世紀のフランス人が多数の人々を運ぶために、定まった経路をスケジュールどおりに巡る公共の乗物を提供したとき、その乗物を voiture omnibus、即ち、「みんなの乗物」と名付けた。おそらく、それ以前は、ブルジョア階級の人々しか馬車で移動することができなかったのだろう。フランスでは「各駅停車の列車、鈍行」のことを train omnibus と呼んでいたので、英国では omnibus train となった。

乗合馬車のサービスが英国でもはじまると、英国人は voiture の部分を省いて、omnibus とした。この単語は更に短縮され、最終的に bus となった。bus は、ラテン語時代には単なる活用語尾にすぎなかったものである。必ずし
も、omnibus が馬車で、bus がエンジンで走る乗合自動車というわけではない。乗合馬車やバスのドライバーや車掌は omnibus man とも呼ばれていた。

omnibus は、十九世紀から二十世紀のはじめ頃までさまざまな派生を見せたが、今では使われなくなった意味もある。
代表的な語義は、日本語にもなった「オムニバス」と、形容詞の「さまざまなものを含んだ、雑多な、包括的な、抱き合わせの、詰め込んだ」などである。これらの語義は、いろいろな人を運ぶ乗り物のイメージから、「いろいろとあつめたもの」であったり、「いろいろなもののためになるもの」であったりする。

omnibus = レストランなどでウェイターを補佐していろいろな雑用を担ったボーイ。

omnibus bill = 反対派の賛同を得る為にいろいろな条項を付け足した「抱き合わせ法案」

omnibus box = オペラハウスなどの「追い込み桟敷席」

omnibus journal = 種々雑多な事件を扱う雑誌、新聞の類。

omnibus ticket = 複数人が有効な切符。

一般的ではないが、動詞の意味としては、「乗合馬車で移動する、運ぶ」や「オムニバスにして出版する」などの意味がある。

音楽や文学の「小品」のこと。opus は「作品」を、-cule は指小辞で little に値する。この単語は通例、複数形 opuscula で用いられる。opus の女性形は opera であるが、この単語はもちろん「オペラ、歌劇」のことを指す。

印欧祖語は *op- 「はたらく、うごく、豊富につくる」であるとされ、たとえば、omnibus などの omni- も、opus と同形とされている。operate は「巧みにこなす、あやつる」といった語感を有する。co- は「共」であるから、cooperation は「共に働くこと」で「共同、協力」の意味になる。
