Art to Hide False Heart

Duncan has the poor sense to evaluate his men. The former thane of Cawdor has been absolutely trusted by Duncan (Duncan himself says so at Act 1 Scene 4), but he has betrayed & made treason, & has finally executed by Duncan’s order. The new thane of Cawdor Macbeth is absolutely trusted by Duncan, too, but he is worse than the former thane on loyalty. For Macbeth. foul is fair (See Act 1 Scene 1). "There is no art to find the mind's construction in the face," but there might some art be to hide the mind's construction. Macbeth says on this point at Act 1 Scene 7:

False face must hide what the false heart doth know.

ダンカンには人を見る目がない。最初のコーダーの殿はダンカンから全幅の信頼を得ていた (ダンカンは第一幕第四場でそういっている) が、裏切って、謀反に走り、しまにいはダンカンの命令によって処刑された。新しいコーダーの殿マクベスもまたダンカンから全幅の信頼を受けているが、忠誠心においては前任者よりも悪い。マクベスにとっては間違いこそ正しいのだ (第一幕第一場参照)。「表情から精神の構造を見抜く術はない」が、しかし、精神の構造を隠す術はあるのかもしれない。第一幕第七場でマクベスは言う。
