夢の中の夢

夢の中の夢、この言い回しは、ポー (Edgar Allan Poe) が一八二〇年代に書いた詩の中にある。

All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
見ているもの、見ているようなものはみな
夢の中の夢にすぎない。

一見、断片だけとれば、荘子の夢の胡蝶を連想させるものだが、もちろん、ポーの二連の詩は荘周のものとは異なる。第一スタンザの最後の二行は肯定文だが、第二スタンザの最後の二行は神に対する問いかけになっている。

Is all we see and seem

But a dream within a dream?

見ているもの、見ているようなものはみな

夢の中の夢にすぎないものなのか。

この詩の全文は以下のとおりである。

Take this kiss upon the brow!

And, in parting from you now,

Thus much let me avow:

You are not wrong who deem

That my days have been a dream;

Yet if hope has flown away

In a night, or in a day,

In a vision, or in none,

All that we see or seem

Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar

Of a surf-tormented shore,

And I hold within my hand

Grains of the golden sand--
