Three Hours for Lunch Club

The Three Hours for Lunch Club was founded at New York in 1930s by Christopher Morley, who was an American novelist, essayist, poet, & an enthusiast of Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare, & Faust. With his intention, the club had to be “immoral” & to “encourage a greedy and rambling humor in the young of both sexes.” They held their lunch parties anywhere, except for the places a club of New York celebrities, the Algonquin Round Table, chose. The witty fellows of Morley sometimes gathered at a railway station food counter. They always enjoyed eating good food, drinking shandygaff, smoking fine cigarettes, chatting, & joking, over the years. The merry, sociable club founder  once said:  

Cherish all your happy moments: they make a fine cushion for old age.

三時間昼食倶楽部は、アメリカの小説家・随筆家・詩人で、シャーロック・ホームズとシェイクスピアとファウストの熱心な愛好家であったクリストファー・モーリーによって一九三〇年代にニューヨークで創設された。彼の意図によって、倶楽部は「不道徳」でなければならず、また、「がつがつしていてとりとめもないユーモアを男女双方の若者の間に盛り上げる」ところでなくてはならなかった。昼食会は、ニューヨークのセレブの集まりであるアルゴンキンの円卓が選ばないところなら、どこででも開かれていた。機智に富んだモーリーの仲間たちは時には駅のフードカウンターに集まっていた。長年、美食を楽しみ、シャンディーを飲み、うまい煙草を吸って、お喋りし、冗談を言い合って楽しんでいた。陽気で社交的な倶楽部の創設者はこんなことをいったことがある。
