ブルースは音楽の一ジャンル。
普通、十二小節のコードパターンや
歌詞を反復する叙情的な
心に残る楽曲。
哀愁を帯びたものや
歓喜を歌うものなどがある。
歌詞のないブルースは
ジャズの範疇に入るのかもしれないし、
歌のあるブルースは
ロックに属するのかもしれない。

起源は十八から十九世紀の米南部の
プランテーションで働く
アフリカ系アメリカ人たちの民族歌。
ただ、ブルースと呼ばれる音楽が
認知され出したのは二十世紀初頭らしい。
音楽を指す blues の初出は一九一二年。
のちにブルースは
リズムアンドブルースや
ロックンロールに派生していった。
日本の演歌・歌謡曲の中にも
ブルースの影響を受けた楽曲がある。

ブルースの音色 (音符) は、
blue notes
という。

複数形で
(blues)
「物悲しいこと、憂鬱、失望、落胆」
の意味は十八世紀に出現した。

形容詞 (blue) でブルーな気分や様子を
表す表現は十六世紀から。
(blue funk 「狼狽、落胆)

がっかりしている様子を
表すのは、おそらく、恐怖や寒気で
あおくなっている様子を
You look blue
などと言うことと関連があるだろう。
日本でも具合がわるそうな人の顔色は
「あおい」

blue は
「元気がない、活気がない」
から、類似の語義を次々に熟成した。

ブルーな気分やブルーな情景とは、
どんよりと停滞した様子を指すが、
もともと色を表す言葉だから、
感情の表明では、語義があいまいで、
ガーシュインの
Rhapsody in Blue
のように、定義に困る  blue の例もある。

blues は単数として扱われたり、
複数として扱われたりする。
(Unlike jazz, the  blues don’t require many musicians. 
ジャズと異なり、ブルースでは多くの楽師は必要ない。)

「痣ができるほど」

もともとの中英語期の語形は 

blak and bla / blak and blo

このうしろの bla や blo は

blue ではなく、 blae だったのだと言う。

今となっては、かろうじて方言として

生き残っているこの blae は、

ノルド語由来で、「ダークブルー」

乃至、内出血した肌の色などを指していた。

同系のドイツ語はロマンス諸語に

取り入れられ、例えば、フランス語 bleu を

つくったが、このフランス語は

英語 blue の語源。つまり、
ブリテン島には二種類の「あお」があったのだ。

バイキングがかつてもたらした

blo や bla (blae) と、その後、

ノルマン人がもたらした blue である。

前者は後者が入って来ても、

十六世紀まで通用していた。

その後、blae やその転訛形は、

南部やミッドランドから消え去り、

北部イングランドや

スコットランドで方言として

遺るのみとなった。

OED は

「廃用、スコットランドと北部の方言」

との但し書きを付けて、

blae の項目を設けている。

PHRASE HISTORY

Middle English blak and bla: bla (blo, blae, etc.) was adopted from Old Norse blá “dark blue, livid,” which has the same origin of blue. The phrase, for example, is used as: to beat black and blue “to bruise roughly.”

は、フランス語で、字義は

「白い山、白山」のことだが、

栗の砂糖づけとクリームなどを

トッピングしたお菓子の一種。
栗を用いるので、

mont-blanc aux marrons

「栗のモンブラン」ともいう。

伊仏スイス国境にある

冠雪したアルプス山脈の

標高四千八百七メートルの

最高峰モンブランと

似ていることから、

こう呼ばれようになった。

イタリア語では

monte bianco

発祥は十五世紀イタリアで、

フランスでは十七世紀に一般化し、

日本には二十世紀に入ってきた。

花びらが薄い色の花のこと。

例えば、ヤハズカズラや

ルドベキアなど。

OED は、イングランドのバラードの

登場人物である黒い目のスーザンからだろう、

と説明している。

バラードの一曲は、

水兵と黒い目のスーザンの恋の歌。

上官の心ない言葉が

二人を引き裂く。

ヒナギクなどの丸い素朴な野花から、

丸くてくるくる回るリボルバーを

連想する人たちもいた。

米国の西部・南部の方言で、

黒い目のスーザンは、

リボルバー式の拳銃を指す。

late 19th c. “flower that has the dark-colored eye and pale petals, or a plant that bears these flowers. For example, the Thunbergia alata of the Acanthaceae family, native to East Africa, & the Rudbeckia hirta of the daisy family, native to North America.” This sense may be related to the name of a character of English ballads.

19th c., in the US, “revolver.” Some people in the Western or Southern region of the United States associated a revolver with a flower of the black-eyed Susan.
