　Merriam-Webster 配信の Word of the Day によると、「GROK は火星語に由来する唯一の英単語であろう」とのことである。ヴァレンタイン・マイケル・スミスは火星で育って、大人になってから地球に移住してきたが、その言葉の一つ grok は一九六〇年代からアメリカの若者のヴォキャブラリーになっていった。火星人スミスについては、ハインライン著の『異星の客』に記されている。
　意味は「深く (きちんと) 理解する、把握する、悟る」こと。

He wouldn't grok that you were joking.
彼は君にからかわれたんだなんて気づいちゃいないだろうね。
