印欧語族二大語群の一つで、祖語の口蓋音が歯擦音化したものを「サテム語群」という。このグループに属するのは、インド・イラン語派、アルメニア語派 (アルメニア語のみ)、アルバニア語派、スラブ語派、バルト語派である。語源はインド・イラン語派に入る古代ペルシャのアヴェスタ語「百、沢山 (hundred)」から。(See also centum languages)
