ユダヤの正月 (Jewish New Year)。ヘブライ語「年頭、年の頭」から。ユダヤ暦では七番目の月の初日、及び、二日目で、グレゴリオ太陽暦では、年によって異なるが、九月から十月の間になる。
The Torah tells us: "On the first day of the seventh month (Tishri), you should not do any work. You shall celebrate and sound the shofar."
トーラーの教え「第七の月 (ティシュリ) の最初の日にはいかなる仕事もしてはいけません。あなた方はこの日を祝い、ショーファー (羊の角でできた笛) を鳴らしなさい」
頭を指す英単語 head には、「(時間的な) はじまり」の意味はなく、従って、head of the year などとは言わない。
翻って日本語を見てみると、漢語で「年頭」という呼び名があり、この点に関していえば、日本語はユダヤの発想に似ている。
