ラテン語「塩 (sal)」から。
「塩の (salinus)」は推定形で、
実用例文は皆無だが、中性形 (salinum) は、
「塩倉 (salt cellar)」、女性複数形 (salinae) は、
「塩坑 (salt pits)」の意味であった。
英語接尾辞 (-ine) は、「〜のような、
〜の性質をもっている (like or having the nature of)」を
指している (例: elephantine 「ゾウのような、ゾウ並みの」)
薬学上の意味は、「マグネシウム含塩下剤、生理食塩水」
名詞 (salinity) は「塩分、塩度」
