ETYMOLOGY
In the 20th century, the Italian dessert name tiramisu was borrowed into the English Language which literally means “pick me up! or lift me up!”
The Italian verb tirare comes from the Latin verb tirare “to pull or draw,” mi, from Latin me, mihi “me,” & su, from Latin sūsum “up.”
MEANING & USE
Tiramisu is a popular Italian dessert made with layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, cocoa powder, and sometimes a touch of liqueur like Marsala or Kahlúa. It’s often served chilled.

ティラミスはコーヒに浸したレディーフィンガークッキー、マスカルポーネチーズ、ココアパウダーなどを層にして重ねたイタリアのデザート。マルサラワインやカルーアを注ぎ足したものもある。ふつうは冷やしたまま食べる。
英語になったのは1980年代。イタリア語の tirami su 「私を引っ張り上げて = 元気にして・元気ちょうだい」から。イタリア語はラテン語の子孫語 (daughter language) だから、 tira- の不定形 tirare、一人称代名詞目的格 mi、副詞 su はすべてラテン語に由来している。
このお菓子は世界中に知られていて、世界中の言語がイタリア語 tiramisu を借用している。レシピも多種多様である。
