十六世紀に出現した熟語。

当初は二語であった。

(black guard)

現代では一語になって、

-ck- の音は消失した。

十六世紀から用例があり、

当初は台所の器具を扱う

一番下の召使いや、

兵士の従者や、

家のない人々を

black guard

と称していた。

語源ははっきりわからない。

ウェストミンスターの警備兵団は

Black Guard

であったとか、

葬列の従者たちだったとか、

松明をもって夜道を導く

少年たちだったとか、

諸説ある。

この単語はかつては一団を指したり、

一人を指したりしたが、今は一人を指す。

この black はやがて、
「わるい」や「不良の」になり、

十八世紀になると、

blackguard

は 「ちんぴら、ならず者」

といった意味になっていった。

この単語の black は

blackmail や black market の

black に似ている。

現代英語の名詞には

この意味だけが残っている。

blackguard には

「嗅ぎ煙草の一種」

という一味違う語義もあった。

のちにダブリンで

煙草商になるフットは

こどもの頃、丁稚奉公していた煙草屋で

嗅ぎ煙草の調合を間違えてしまい、

そのせいで、主人からは

「アイルランドのろくでなし」

と渾名された。大人になって

自分で商売するようになると、

かつて失敗したやり方で

嗅ぎ煙草を調合してみたところ、

これが嗅ぎ煙草愛好家に好評で、

フットは裕福になった。

彼が ”考案した” この嗅ぎ煙草は

「ろくでなし」
(blackguard)

あるいは、

「アイルランドのろくでなし」

(Irish blackguard)

と呼ばれた。

16th c., “lowest menials who have charge of kitchen utensils; servants in an army; children or men who belong to the lowest class of the society” (guard = group of people). Also, a “man or boy who serves a soldier; one who blacks boots for their customers on the street; vagabond” (guard = person)

18th c., “bad boy, rascal, rogue, villain.” Only survived sense as a noun.

18th c., “kind of snuff; Lundyfoot.” This snuff was also called the Irish blackguard. From the name of a tobacco shop master in Dublin, Lundy Foot (1735-1805). When he was a young shop boy, making a mistake of preparation of some snuff, his master called him “Irish blackguard.” But his mistake became a new preparation for snuff & brought him a fortune.
