数学のシンボル、未知数、変数の x

Aが人生における成功だとすると、
Aはx足すy足すzに等しい。
仕事がxで、yは遊び、
そして、zは沈黙である。

イランの詩人オマル・ハイヤームは、
代数の論文で未知数を著すのに、
アラビア語のシャイ (shay: 「もの」) を用いた。
イスラム圏における未知数の表現には
伝統的にこれが用いられ、
やがて、スペイン人たちは、
ムスリムの知惠を相続し、
Xay (サイ)
を用いるようになった。その後、
そのスペイン語の頭文字だけをとって、
数式では、未知数を x で著すようになり、
それが世界共通になった。

夜の音楽。夜想曲。
「夜」と「音楽」の合成。
モーツァルトの楽曲の英訳題にも用いられている。

　Eine kleine Nachtmusik (K. 525, A Little Night Music)
　is perhaps Mozart's best-known composition
　amid the serenades. It was written in 1787,
　the same year as his opera Don Giovanni.

　『アイネ・クライネ・ナハトムジーク』(K.525、
　小夜曲) は、おそらく、セレナーデの中でも
　モーツァルトの最も有名な楽曲でしょう。

二十世紀になると、
　夜の自然界の鳥や虫の声を想起させる音楽
の意味が成立したが、バルトークのスタイルから
生まれたらしい。ピアノ組曲『戸外にて』の
第四楽章『夜の音楽』は、
自然の音を楽曲に変換したものである。

　"the night's music" for the fourth movement
　of his suite "Out of Doors" (written
　just before the First Concerto),
　an evocation of the nocturnal sounds of the nature --
　the bird calls, cricket chirps, rustling leaves and so on.
