nullus は英語 null の語源で、ne ullus、即ち、not any「ひとつもない」から出来ている。

omnia は omnis の中性複数主格・対格形 (このことわざでは対格) で、「すべてを」

scire は science の語源となった動詞で、「知る」こと。

potest (不定形 posse) は、「(影響力などの) 力がある 、能力がある、できる」ことを指す。「勢力がある、有力な、強力な」などを意味する英語の potent の語源であるが、機能的には can と同じ。ただ、can と異なり頻雑な人称活用がある。
