かばん語はルイス・キャロルの『鏡の国のアリス』に由来している。ハンプティ・ダンプティ (Humpty Dumpty) がアリスに詩『ジャバワックぽく (Jobberwocky)』の講釈をしているときに、かばんを引き合いに出して説明する。

“Well, ‘slithy’ means ‘lithe and  slimy’... You see it's like a portmanteau—there are two meanings packed up into one word. “

　この詩はルイス・キャロルのナンセンスな言葉遣いで記されているため、ジャバワック、または、ジャバワッキー ( Jabberwock / Jabberwocky ) は、「たわごと (の)、でたらめ (の)」または、「たわごとを言う、でたらめに書く」といった意味の一般名詞・形容詞・動詞として使われている。ジャバワックは、日本語では、ジャバウォックなどとも表記される。
