A Court which will Settle International Differencies

 A Court which will Settle International Differencies

Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) , the Military Commander of the Northern States in the Civil War & the 18th U. S. President from 1869 to 1877, went on his long journey after his presidency. During this post-presidency world diplomatic & sightseeing tour, he visited Liverpool, London, Paris, Hague, Berlin, Lucerne, Milan, Rome, Madrid, Vienna, St. Petersburg, Cairo, Jerusalem, Constantinople, Bombay, Calcutta, Delhi, Rangoon, Bangkok, Saigon, Shanghai, Beijing, & Tokyo, where he mediated Japan & Qing China in a dispute over the Ryukyu Islands. He was a politician who encouraged negotiation and compromise rather than war. One of his remarks is:

Though I have been trained as a soldier, and participated in many battles, there never was a time when, in my opinion, some way could not be found to prevent the drawing of the sword. I look forward to an epoch when a court, recognized by all nations, will settle international differences.

私は兵士として訓練され、数多くの戦闘に従事してきたが、私の見たところ、剣を抜かざるえかったことは一度としてなかった。私は、全ての国家によって認められた法廷が、国際紛争を解決する時代が来ることを切に願っている。

Because It’s There

Because It’s There

The height of Mount Everest is 29,031 ft, or 8,848m, but it was not certain in the early 20th century. However, there were the challengers, who wanted to climb Mt. Everest whose Tibetan name is Chomolungma “the Goddess of Earth” & Nepali name is Sagarmatha “the Mother of the Great Sky.” No one could achieve at the summit, then. One of the British expedition mountaineers was George Mallory who was asked in a lecture at New York by a reporter why he wanted to ascend the highest mountain of the world. He answered:

"Because it’s there."

「そこに山があるからだ。」

 NOTE

They found a route to a higher location at the 1st expedition, & then, found a further path in the 2nd climbing, &  they were finally approaching the peak in the 3rd attempt, but it is thought that they couldn’t touch the summit. Their ambitions and motivations were succeeded to the next generation mountaineers, however.

ENGLISH NAME OF THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN THE WORLD

Mount Everest was named after Sir George Everest (1790-1866), British surveyor & geographer, serving as Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843. The name was proposed in 1865 by his successor Andrew Waugh, even though George Everest himself reportedly did not support naming the mountain after him & preferred local names.

エベレスト山は、1830年から1841年までインド測量庁の長官を務めた、測量技師で地質学者の英国人ジョージ・エベレストの名前に因んで命名された。命名を推進したのは後継者のアンドリュー・ウォーであったが、ジョージ・エベレスト本人は現地名を好み、山に自分の名前をつけることに反対していたのだという。

~~~ WORD DNA ~~~~~~~~~~
EYMOLOGY
Before 1500, the term eulogy was formed in influence under Greek ελογα (eulogia) “good words or speech, praise, blessing” ; eu- is the prefix made from Greek “good, well” & -(o)logy, the suffix from Greek λογα “(collected) words; oracle, teachings” which was made with λόγος “word, speech, oration, discourse, reason, rationality, account, argument, principle, order, rule” & -α, the suffix that makes nouns abstract. Λόγος is from the verb λέγειν “to say, count, or collect.”
MEANING & USE
IN GENERAL USE: “high praise, especially for someone who has just died; funeral oration”:
   He delivered a heartfelt eulogy at his father’s funeral…
   His eulogy focused on kindness and the joy she brought to others...
   The bitterness was so deep that McCain specifically requested that Trump not attend his funeral 2018. Instead, McCain invited Trump's political rivals Goerge W. Bush and  Barack Obama, to deliver the eulogies...
 eulogy はギリシャ語の影響下にできた言葉で、字義的には、「良い弁論」である。古典ギリシャ語では、「賛辞、称賛」で、特に「死者を讃える言葉、弔辞」であった。
 語源は古典ギリシャ語で、 eu- が「よい」、-logy が「学、論」である。-logy は、究極的には、印欧祖語 *leg- からできている。
印欧祖語 *leg- / *log- 集める・言う
        ── ギリシャ語 λέγειν(言う・集める)
                └── λόγος(言葉・理性)→ logic, dialogue
        └── ラテン語 legere(集める・読む・選ぶ)
                 ── collect(共に+集める)
                 ── select(離して+選ぶ)
                 ── intellect(内に+集めたもの→理解力)
                 ── lecture(読むこと)
                 └── legend(読まれるもの→伝説)
 ギリシャ語以降、-(o)logy が成立するまでは以下の通りである。なお、eulogy -o-はないが、この接尾辞は -ology の形の方が普通である。
λέγειν (legein) = 言う・語る
     ↓(名詞化)
λόγος (logos) = 言葉・理性・論理・説明
     ↓(派生:集合・抽象を作る接尾辞 -ία
λογία (logía) = 言葉の集まり・教え・論説・神託
     ↓(ラテン語化)
-logia = 学問・論(例:biologia, theologia
     ↓(英語化)
-(o)logy = ~学、~論(例:biology, theology, psychology
 -(o)logyが組み込まれた英単語は無数にある。
