The height of Mount Everest is 29,031 ft, or 8,848m, but it was not certain in the early 20th century. However, there were the challengers, who wanted to climb Mt. Everest whose Tibetan name is Chomolungma “the Goddess of Earth” & Nepali name is Sagarmatha “the Mother of the Great Sky.” No one could achieve at the summit, then. One of the British expedition mountaineers was George Mallory who was asked in a lecture at New York by a reporter why he wanted to ascend the highest mountain of the world. He answered:

"Because it’s there."

They found a route to a higher location at the 1st expedition, & then, found a further path in the 2nd climbing, &  they were finally approaching the peak in the 3rd attempt, but it is thought that they couldn’t touch the summit. Their ambitions and motivations were succeeded to the next generation mountaineers, however.

ENGLISH NAME OF THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN THE WORLD

Mount Everest was named after Sir George Everest (1790-1866), British surveyor & geographer, serving as Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843. The name was proposed in 1865 by his successor Andrew Waugh, even though George Everest himself reportedly did not support naming the mountain after him & preferred local names.

EYMOLOGY
Before 1500, the term eulogy was formed in influence under Greek εὐλογία (eulogia) “good words or speech, praise, blessing” ; eu- is the prefix made from Greek “good, well” & -(o)logy, the suffix from Greek λογία “(collected) words; oracle, teachings” which was made with λόγος “word, speech, oration, discourse, reason, rationality, account, argument, principle, order, rule” & -ία, the suffix that makes nouns abstract. Λόγος is from the verb （λέγειν “to say, count, or collect.”

　eulogy はギリシャ語の影響下にできた言葉で、字義的には、「良い弁論」である。古典ギリシャ語では、「賛辞、称賛」で、特に「死者を讃える言葉、弔辞」であった。

　語源は古典ギリシャ語で、 eu- が「よい」、-logy が「学、論」である。-logy は、究極的には、印欧祖語 *leg- からできている。
