We Must Know, We Will Know
David Hilbert (1862–1943) was a German mathematician known for his foundational contributions to many areas of mathematics, including algebra, number theory, geometry, and mathematical logic. He played a key role in formalizing mathematics and establishing the axiomatic method. One of his most significant achievements is Hilbert’s 23 problems, including the Riemann hypothesis, which says about the mathematical mystery of prime numbers. On his tombstone, his declaration of optimism about the pursuit of mathematical and scientific knowledge is inscribed: “Wir müssen wissen, wir werden wissen.” In English, these words say:
We must know, we will know.
