小麦粉の原材料。

温帯地域で広く栽培されていて、

挽いて取れる小麦粉は

パンなどの主食になるので、

「有用なもの、大切なもの」

小麦は生物学的には

大麦やライ麦の仲間。

一方、英単語 wheat は

言語学的には、

ゲルマン語族出身で、

white の仲間。

挽いた小麦、即ち、

小麦粉が白いため。

ことわざではもみがら (chaff) や

毒麦 (tares) などと対比させて、

「有益なもの」

basic sense

Old English, “grain of a cereal, from which the flour is made; plant which yields this grain, closely related to barley & rye.”
