エーデルワイスはドイツ語で、
アルプスの高山植物。
人が滅多に行かない岩肌に育ち、
可憐な白い花を咲かせる。
ドイツ語の字義は「高貴な白」
英語には十九世紀半ばに入ってきた。
日本語のエーデルワイスもドイツ語から。
映画『サウンド・オブ・ミュージック』の
挿入歌『エーデルワイス』は
日本でも親しまれている。

1862, “Alpine plant known by its white flower, growing on the Swiss rocky mountains that is scarcely found. Leontopodium alpinum.” This word was borrowed from German Edelweiß , literally “noble white.”
