palinode

　「以前の詩を撤回する詩、改詠詩、改める歌 (a poem or song retracting something in a previously written one)」が英語の初義。初出は十六世紀末で、「前言撤回 (a recantation)」の意味に派生した。

 

The earlier Greek poet Stesichorus was struck blind after writing poems that disparaged Helen, the wife of Menelaus. As the myth goes, it was only after Stesichorus retracted his insults against Helen in another poem, Palinode, that his eyesight returned.

 古代ギリシャ初期の詩人ステシコロスは、メネラオスの妻であるヘレネを貶す詩を書いた後に失明した。伝説によると、その後に書いた改詠詩で、ヘレネに対する誹りを取り消しただけで、ステシコロスの視力は回復したのだという。

　この単語を構成している要素はギリシャ語の palin 「再び、戻って」と aoide「詩、歌」である。前半の要素を有する単語には「書いたり消したりできる紙、羊皮紙 ( palimpsest)」や「回文 (palindrome)」や「輪廻転生 (palingenesis)」がある。
